Skincare can get loud. One minute an ingredient is a holy grail, the next it’s being “cancelled” on TikTok. After years of trial, error, irritation, and way too many half-used bottles under my sink, I’ve stopped chasing trends and started paying attention to what my skin actually responds to.
These are the non-negotiable ingredients in my routine, the ones I come back to every single time, because they give me the results that I want.
Hyaluronic Acid (HA): the hydration hero
If my skin had a comfort blanket, this would be it. Hyaluronic acid is all about hydration. HA is a humectant, which basically means it pulls water into the skin and helps keep it there. It attracts and holds onto water, helping skin look plumper, smoother, and generally more alive. HA is all about supporting your skin.
Why it’s a non-negotiable:
- Boosts hydration and helps prevent moisture loss.
- Plumps the skin, making fine lines look softer.
- Supports the skin barrier (which means everything else works better),
Where it fits in your routine:
For me, HA usually shows up in a serum or essence step. I like applying it to slightly damp skin as one of my first steps, then sealing it in with moisturiser. It's morning and night friendly and plays well with pretty much everything else in your routine.
Best for: basically all skin types, but especially if your skin ever feels tight, dehydrated or a bit meh.
Retinol: the long-game ingredient
Retinol is the ingredient I side-eyed for years before committing, but now I can't be without it. It’s one of the most researched ingredients in skincare, known for encouraging cell turnover and supporting collagen production. Translation: smoother texture, fewer breakouts and better skin over time. It’s best used at night, and if you’re new to it, starting slow is key, with a lower strength. Think one or two nights a week, then building up, because it can make your skin more sensitive or reactive. A little dryness or sensitivity at first is normal, but if your skin is angry, that’s your cue to ease off. And ALWAYS wear SPF, because retinol can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.
Why it’s a non-negotiable:
- Helps improve skin texture and tone.
- Supports collagen for firmer-looking skin.
- Can help with breakouts and congestion.
- The best ingredient to help with the signs of ageing.
Where it fits in your routine:
Retinol is a night-only ingredient, usually applied as a serum after cleansing and before moisturiser. If you’re new to it, start slow, a couple of nights a week is plenty, and build up gradually. And yes, as I mentioned, SPF the next morning is non-negotiable too.
Best for: anyone looking to future-proof their skin, smooth texture, or manage breakouts, as long as you’re patient and consistent (as it takes at least month, usually longer, to start seeing results from retinol).
Niacinamide: the quiet overachiever
Niacinamide doesn’t shout, but it absolutely shows up. This form of vitamin B3 works behind the scenes to strengthen the skin barrier, balance oil and even out skin tone. If you ask me, it’s one of those ingredients that makes everything else in your routine work better.
Why it’s a non-negotiable:
- Helps regulate oil production.
- Supports the skin barrier.
- Can improve redness and uneven tone.
- Helps refine the look of pores over time.
Where it fits in your routine:
You’ll usually find niacinamide in serums or moisturisers. It can be used morning or night and it layers beautifully with both HA and retinol, making it an easy everyday staple.
Best for: oily, combination, sensitive, or breakout-prone skin… honestly, most people.
Vitamin C: for glow and protection
If retinol is the long game, vitamin C is like your daytime wingwoman. It helps brighten, even tone and protect skin from environmental stress (I'm looking at you, pollution and UV). It can be finicky for some people to find the right Vitamin C for their skin, as it can break some people out, particularly as it's not always the most stable ingredient. Personally, I find that L-Ascorbic Acid works best for me as it's a pure vitamin C. You can typically get it in different strengths (start lower strength if you're new or unsure) and look for ones that come in airtight packaging, as they will last longer.
Why it's a non-negotiable:
- Boosts radiance and helps fade pigmentation.
- Supports collagen production.
- Provides antioxidant protection.
Where it fits in your routine:
Morning serum step, before moisturiser and SPF. If pure vitamin C feels too spicy, derivatives are a gentler option.
Best for: dull or tired skin, if you're struggling with pigmentation or want to start tackling the signs of ageing.
Ceramides: for barrier health
Ceramides are the unsung heroes that keep your skin calm, resilient, and functioning properly, especially important if you’re using other actives in your routine, such as retinol or vitamin C. I love having ceramides in my routine because they feel like the secret to keeping my skin calm and happy. While I don't have sensitive skin, I do have the occasional irritation, which ceramides are great in supporting.
Why include it:
- Strengthens the skin barrier.
- Reduces dryness and irritation.
- Helps skin retain moisture.
Where it fits:
Usually found in moisturisers and creams, used morning and night. Think of ceramides as the ingredient that keeps everything else in check, supporting your skin so your actives can do their job without causing chaos.
Best for: Dry, sensitive or compromised skin. But basically anyone using active ingredients who wants to keep their barrier strong, calm and balanced.
SPF: for protection and prevention (the non-negotiable of non-negotiables!!)
SPF is the most important step in any skincare routine and the one that protects all the work your other products are doing. It shields your skin from UV damage, which is the leading cause of premature ageing, pigmentation and skin barrier breakdown. If you're not wearing SPF every day (of 50+!) you NEED to. If you have the perfect routine, but no SPF, then you're doing the rest of your skincare a serious injustice.
Why include it:
- Protects against UV damage and sunburn.
- Helps prevent premature ageing and fine lines.
- Reduces pigmentation and dark spots.
- Protects results from active ingredients like retinol and vitamin C.
Where it fits:
Always the final step of your morning routine, applied after moisturiser and before makeup. Use daily, even on cloudy days or when you’re mostly indoors (because you can still get sun damage even in those settings)
Best for: Everyone. All skin types, all ages, all routines. No other details needed, wear SPF.
