Making Sustainable Changes

If you read too much into it or think about it too long, it's a little terrifying, the effect of the way we have all been living for so long is having on the environment. Each year we produce so much waste that our planet is running out of room and things to do with it. It. Is. Scary. But it's also a real problem facing the world at the moment. Dave and I have recently been trying to make some positive changes to help reduce our waste at home.

Now, please don't read this as me being a preachy activist telling you that the way you live is wrong. That is absolutely NOT what I am trying to say. I am simply writing this post as we have made some changes to try and be more consciously sustainable in our consumption and waste production. I don't know all the facts about the world's waste. We still produce waste. Not everything we do is sustainable. I am simply sharing this as I have had a lot of questions about the products I have been purchasing and I simply wanted to share. At the end of the day, it is a hard change to make. It is hard to cut out waste, but anything small thing we can do to help makes a difference.

Anyway, let's just get into it!

ecostore Cleaning Products

This is a switch we have made for a few reasons. In all our attempts to cut back on plastic and waste we were throwing out, it occurred to me that we should probably try to use more natural cleaning products to try and reduce the harmful chemicals that go down our drains. I also made this switch, as my eczema can often flair up from the cleaning products we use at home. After looking into a few brands, I decided to check out ecostore. So far I have been very impressed with how they have been going. Some of the products I have picked up include:

Toilet Cleaner: a plant-based cleaner that's tough on germs for spotless results. It is independently proven to kill common household germs including E.coli, Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas bacteria. I bought it in the Eucalyptus scent, which smells heavenly, fresh but not like harsh toilet cleaners. You can buy it in a 500mL bottle, as well as a 5L refill bottle.

Multi-Purpose Cleaner: Formulated from the latest generation plant-based ingredients for a spotless finish on all hard household surfaces, including kitchen bench-tops, appliances and walls. A great multi-purpose cleaner that works for pretty much anything and everything. Big fan of this - I have been using it for almost everything.

Bathroom and Shower Cleaner: Formulated from the latest generation plant-based ingredients to cut through dirt, soap scum and hard waterspotting for a sparkling finish. This is the product that won ecostore for me. Our shower was AWFUL, so dirty, but a spray of this and now it is sparkly clean again. I simply sprayed it, left it for 10 minutes or so, then wiped clean. No awful bleach scent that leaves you feeling sick after cleaning. It's wonderful!

Laundry Powder: A plant and mineral based laundry powder powerfully cuts through dirt, leaving your laundry clean and smelling fresh. I bought this in the Ultra Sensitive, fragrance free variety. My eczema has been bad recently, but this switch has definitely helped reduce irritation that comes from laundry products.

Fabric Softener: Add a little of our fabric softener to your wash for luxurious softness and the fresh, clean smell of natural citrus. Another really lovely, gentle alternative for your fabric softener. Smells fresh and lovely and leaves your clothes so soft.

Dishwasher Tablets: A high performance all-in-one dishwasher tablets with built-in rinse aid will leave your dishes sparkling clean, without nasty chemical residues. These I haven't actually tried yet, but they sound good and I've heard good things, so I am excited to try these.

Dish Liquid: Powerful formulation for sparkling clean dishes, while being kinder to your skin and to our environment. I am also really enjoying this. A lovely grapefruit scent, that is sweet and heavenly, but helps to leave your dishes squeaky clean. It is so lovely.

So far I have been very impressed with the brand and the range they have to offer. I haven't tried a whole lot of natural cleaning products, so I don't know how they compare, but if they work, why question it right! They also have skincare products as well if you are looking for some delicious smelling soaps and body lotions!

You can purchase ecostore from Flora and Fauna or Nourished Life.

Produce Bags

One thing that I started to realise was just how much plastic we threw out with each grocery shopping. From fruit and veg alone we would go through SO much plastic. I decided this was one big change we needed to make. I picked up some mesh produce bags and have not looked back. I chose the Life Basics Large Produce Bags from Nourished Life, because they were half price (and still are). They come with 8 mesh produce bags that you can store in a little carry bag. I have the bag hooked over the fridge so when we finish the fruit or veg in one of the bags, we just pop it in the bag on the fridge and then chuck the bag with our grocery bags when it's time for our next shop. There are all sorts of produce bags, with different types of mesh, and there's really no wrong choice!

Silicone Ziplock Bags

Seeing so many silicone ziplock bags all over the internet, I was WAY too excited about the prospect of buying some. There are so many different brands and versions you can buy. I ordered a few on eBay, most of them didn't arrive and I had to ask for refunds, but I did start with this 6 pack, that cost less than $10. They work well, but are thin and I can see them wearing out over time. So I then went out and ordered a bunch of Stasher Bags which I LOVE!  They have a variety of different sizes and colours, so you can basically have one for every need and occasion. They seal extremely well as well, so you don't have to worry about them leaking. You can also microwave, boil and freeze them, as well as put them in the dish washer!

I have picked up a large bag, which is great for freezing meat, soups, or bulkier food items, a couple of sandwich bags, which have been perfect for sandwiches, fruit and other snacks, and some snack size ones for delicious snacks! They also have a larger stand up size bag, and a small pocket size pouch as well. The best part is is that you can use them for travelling and storing making, storing stationary or anything else. They really are amazing!

You can show Stasher from Flora and Fauna, Nourished Life, eBay and iHerb (save $5 with the code AUK5140).

Food Covers

There are so many sustainable food covers out there, it can be hard to choose what to use. I have picked up three food cover options so far, that I am loving! We picked up some Beeswax wraps recently that I have been loving. While they were bought local, there are so many options online that you can choose from too. I am thinking of trying the Wrappa Beeswax Wraps from Nourished Life next.

I have also picked up some silicone food covers, which are circular in shape and designed to cover bowls, cups and fruit/veg. They are great and have the cutest little smiley face on the top of them as well.

Last, but not least, I have also picked up some Food Huggers, which you can wrap around different veggies and fruit. They have been SO good for when we cut up limes and lemons, which we never use all of in one hit. The food huggers help to keep them fresh, without drying them out as well. Plus they look pretty cute!

Eating Out

I tend to take all of my lunch in containers to work, so I have been cutting down my waste there, but I am now trying to extend that to when I get food from other places. I have recently picked up a cutlery set to carry around in my hand bag so I never have to get plastic cutlery again. These are cheap and come in a cute little case to make it easy to travel with them.

Everyone is kind of already on this band wagon, but I also have a stack of stainless steel straws now too. My favourite are the Cheeki Set of 4* which come in a cute little mesh bag so you can easily carry them with you if you need.

Now all of that brings me to the last category that I am trying to make some changes in - beauty. While I feel like I'm pretty good at being sustainable in this category, I know there are areas that I can improve. I recently picked up a pack of 20 reusable make up pads from eBay recently, which have been great. I use these for micellar water or toners instead of using cotton pads. While I have my Face Halos, they are not the best for toners and micellar water, they just soak up too much product for my liking. These pads have been perfect. They have a soft bamboo velvet side, as well as a side that feels a bit like your typical face cloths.

The other product I've switched out is my plastic razor to a safety razor. I have this beautiful new razor from EVAH Organics* which is a completely metal razor that is just gorgeous. It contains no disposable plastic, you just change the blade whenever you need to. While it isn't recommend that you recycle razor blades, they suggest keeping a jar or container, filling it with the razors and then putting that in the recycling once it is full. It's gorgeous and good for the environment!

I'd love to hear what sustainable choices you are making at the moment. Are there things you are doing in your life to try and improve your environmental foot print? Are there easy things I'm missing? Let me know in the comments below! My next step is to start a compost, which we will work on when we move!
