Where to Workout in Canberra

2019 is the year of fitness for Dave and myself. We have decided that we are going to get fit and healthy and be better versions of ourselves by the end of the year. If we are being honest, I still order a McFlurry on a bad day, but hey....we can't always be perfect.

My struggle with getting fit, is that I don't always have the motivation to workout by myself and need a little extra bit of motivation to complete a workout, rather than just sitting on the couch. Sometimes that motivation is simply paying for it (can't waste the $$$), other times, it's having someone walking around and not letting you be lazy. I thought I'd share some places I have been loving working out recently.

Yoga with Kayla

Ok, so maybe yoga is your thing, but like me, you are trying to cut back on your spending this year. If that is the case, then I would highly recommend attending some free yoga classes with Kayla. Kayla is a good friend of mine, but that is not just the reason I wanted to share about her classes. During spring and summer, Kayla runs free yoga classes by Lake Burley Griffin and they're great. They are an hour session where you can head down, no matter your skill level, and partake in some yoga. Kayla is there to step through it all and to ensure you are doing your poses correctly. The best prat (in my mind) is the meditation at the end of the session.

While Kayla is now overseas and classes have been paused until the weather warms up, head over to her Facebook or Instagram page to keep up to date on any classes that she is running.

Ascend Strength and Fitness

Dave and I finally signed up to a gym back in December. I have been wanting to join a gym for ages, but was struggling to find a gym that I liked. Some times the gym was great - good facilities, lovely people and a nice vibe, however it would cost me an arm, a leg and my soul to sign up. Other times the facilities weren't up to par, or I just didn't like the vibe. Ascend Strength and Fitness was just down the road from us, about a 5 minute drive, and I had been contemplating it for a while. After getting in touch with them, Dave and I went and tried out a free class - where Tommy kicked our butt during the Hour of Power and I couldn't walk for a week, but I loved it. It was a friendly vibe - people literally cheering you on while you were trying to run up and down the stairs - which was really important to me. It had great facilities, with a variety of equipment to choose from. They also have a good variety of classes to choose from, which was important for me.

Fast forward two months and Dave is basically going daily, and I am hitting two or three times a week, with basketball on the other two nights. I am going to a weekly HIIT class with Katie Stones, which I am loving - she has a big focus on form, rather than trying to get through as many reps as possible. I have chats to girls I don't know on the stair machine, complaining about how much it kills us, and talks to guys up on the strength floor about Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. It has been great and I couldn't recommend it enough. At $17 a week when you sign up for a year, it's also fairly reasonably priced in my opinion. If you're northside and looking for a good gym, cannot recommend Ascend enough!

Bodhifit Studio

If the gym is not your thing, you might be interested in checking out Bodhifit. Bodhifit is a mother daughter duo, who have both practiced hatha yoga for a number of years. They opened up their own studio in Queanbeyan offering both Hatha Yoga and Yoga Sculpt classes throughout the week. You can also sign up to personal classes and have yoga or pilates one on one sessions.

Both Dave and I were going to Yoga Sculpt classes with Chey last year and were loving it. If you're after a low-impact workouts that hit all those tiny muscles you never had, then this is the class for you. I think of it as a mix between Yoga and Pilates and god it hurts! We haven't been back in a few months, just because it's been hard to fit into our schedules, however I am hoping that I will be able to a class or two here and there just to mix up my routine.

Classes cost $22 on a casual pass, or $200 for a 10 class pass.

KX Pilates

Ok, last one! This is a new one for me (and for Canberra) but I am loving it. KX Pilates is a popular pilates company that has studios around Australia and they have just opened up a studio in Canberra. They offer a revolutionary, fast paced, high intensity, body-toning workout in just 50 minutes. The reformer pilates workout helps you workout smarter, not longer, fusing elements of traditional reformer pilates with cardio and endurance training for a high intensity workout. I bought a 5 class pass when they first opened and have been going for a couple of weeks now. It is INTENSE and you will feel the burn, but it is also so good. It is a completely different way of working out and has been lots of fun. The instructors are great and will help correct your form as you're going. They have beginner, intermediate and advanced classes, for wherever your pilates is up to.

Classes start from $30 (or $19 if you buy a 50 class pack), making it the most expensive on the list, however, if you're after something a bit different, I would highly recommend checking out KX.
