Embrace Your Style

As some of you may have noticed from my stories, my fashin sense isn't the 'typical' in style that you often see on carefully curated Instagram feeds. It's not neutral, minimal colours in linen fabric with simple accessories, and I have finally learned to embrace that.

For a long time I was really unsure of what my 'style' was. I would spend hours trying to decide what to wear to events so I would 'fit in' and look the part. I wanted to look like the fashion bloggers, in their perfectly styled outfits that looked chic and effortless. Only, my wardrobe didn't consist of those simple pieces in neutral tones.

What I have come to realise is that it is ok to not have the same pieces that you see other girls wearing on Instagram. I think we get so caught up in seeing the same style all over IG, that we feel like we have to fit into that and we don't. When I shop for clothes, I typically shop for pieces that are going to be suitable for teaching. These are often fairly modest pieces (i.e. they have thick straps, are a modest length and don't tend to have deep v necks). As I progressed through last year, I realised that I actually really liked bright statement pieces. Items that often have a bright, in your face pattern on them. It's a fun addition to work, and my students often enjoy them. I like to think it brightens their day a little bit (even if that's just in my mind). When it came to other functions outside of work, I'd usually put these away and stick to the neutral tones, trying to blend in a little bit more. But this year I've decided to stop doing that.

The bright, fun and colour pieces are my style. They are what I love wearing (and buying) and while they are not everyone's cup of tea, they show off who I am. They are what I feel most comfortable in and at the end of the day, that's what an outfit should be - comfortable. So this weekend, for a classy event, I whipped out my brand new banana dress and wore it with pride. And guess what...I loved every minute of it.

So what am I trying to get you to take from this post? That you should embrace your style, whatever your style is, and wear it with pride.

Do you love wearing black? Then wear that with all that you are.

Do you love bright, fun and colourful patterns? Then rock that style girl.

Are you a linen lover? Then wear that linen with pride!

At the end of the day, we are all unique human beings and that is what is important. You are not like anyone else and your style should reflect who you are. Don't feel that you need to conform just to fit in. Through on your banana dress, what ever your banana dress is (the dress or outfit you love the most) and wear it with every ounce of confidence that you have. It's amazing how much better you will feel if you throw on an outfit that you love. Throw it on and dance your heart out (as I do below)
