Netflix and Chill

Being on holidays for most of December and January has left me with a lot of free time or a lot of Netflix and Chill time - like Netflix and Chill on the couch with a bag of Maltesers. After reading A Girl & Grey's post called What To Watch On Netflix This Month, I decided I would also share some of my favourite Netflix picks.

I have been watching a real mix of shows and movies recently. From thrillers to light hearted and fun TV shows, as well as documentary's - something I usually don't watch.

What would you do for love? For a brilliant male bookstore manager who crosses paths with an aspiring female writer, this question is put to the test. With a charming crush becoming something even more sinister. If you're into thrillers, this dark but brilliant TV show is for you. It is based off the book by Caroline Kepnes (which you should also read if you haven't already). There are mixed reviews of this going around, some saying it gets a little too dark and that you will never see Penn Badgely the same way again (because he is brilliant), but I also promise you won't be able to stop watching.

This heartfelt comedy follows Sam, a teenager on the autism spectrum, who has decided he is ready for romance. In order to start dating -- and hopefully find love -- Sam will need to be more independent, which also sends his mother on her own life-changing path. This TV show is so beautifully done. It portrays Sam amazingly (Keir Gilchrist you are amazing) and shows the reality of living with autism and trying to function as a 'normal' person in today's society. You will laugh, you will cry, but most of all you will love the show.

Socially awkward high school student Otis may not have much experience in the lovemaking department, but he gets good guidance on the topic in his personal sex ed course -- living with mum Jean, who is a sex therapist. I was so sure this show would be tacky and crude and not for me at all. BUT OMG IT'S NOT! It is emotional and beautiful and damn I need another season already. Otis goes on an emotional roller coaster as he makes friends, and loses some, learns about sex and all the changes happening to his body at the time. If you haven't watched this yet, you need to! But also know that you will see boobs.

A unique look inside the mind of an infamous serial killer with this cinematic self-portrait crafted from statements made by Ted Bundy, including present-day interviews, archival footage and audio recordings from death row. I am all about true crime at the moment, so I was pumped when I saw this series go up on Netflix. I am watching it slowly (because I can't binge watch documentary's). It is a fascinating look at the mind of a killer.

The misadventures of a Korean-Canadian family running a convenience store. I have talked about this show on my blog before, but I have been rewatching episodes recently because there is another season coming out later this year. It is just such a fun, light hearted TV show that will leave you in tears (laughter tears, maybe some sad tears).

When Eleanor Shellstrop finds herself in the afterlife, she's both relieved and surprised that she's made it into the Good Place. But it doesn't take long for Eleanor to realise she's there by mistake. Hiding in plain sight to avoid getting caught, she discovers other things that seem to be amiss too. This has been on Netflix for ages and I only just got around to watching it recently, but it's great! Funny and light hearted, but also a very deep reflection of society today (but don't think about it if you want something light-hearted and you'll be fine!)

The Fyre Festival was billed as a luxury music experience on a posh private island, but it failed spectacularly in the hands of a young entrepreneur. This documentary takes you through everything that went wrong leading up to this disastrous festival. The reviews of this are correct - it is brilliant. Such an interesting and honest documentary about the Fyre festival that will leave you gobsmacked. They interview a number of different workers, affiliates and attendees of the Fyre festival to explain what exactly went wrong. It is crazy how bad things got and that it still went ahead. Anyway, watch it, then message me and we can debrief!

Based on the best-selling novel by Margaret Atwood, this series is set in Gilead, a totalitarian society in what used to be part of the United States. Gilead is ruled by a fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state, and is faced with environmental disasters and a plummeting birth rate. In a desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world, the few remaining fertile women are forced into sexual servitude. Two things about this - 1) I know this is on Stan and not Netflix, but who cares. 2) I also know that this is not a new release but I finally caved into watching it and I thought it was brilliant. It is dark and frustrating, especially as a woman. It will make you scream at the TV and want to throw things. But it is also brilliantly done and the actors are amazing (Alexis Bledel I am looking at you) and I really need the next seasons to appear somewhere that I can watch them for free please.

What have you been watching on Netflix recently? I feel like I have now watched everything on Netflix (you know that feeling?) and I am on the hunt for something new. Let me know in the comments!
