A letter to my younger self

Dear Laura,

With the New Year fast approaching, it has got me thinking about a lot of things. On a drive home recently, it occurred to me how happy I am at the moment and how grateful I am for where I have ended up. It got me thinking back to all the challenging times growing up and all the things I wish I'd known, hence this blog post! It inspired me to write a letter to my younger self, with the top 5 lessons or ideas that I have been challenged by and what I wish I'd known when I was growing up.

Despite all the sh** that is going to come your way, you will get through it. While it seems obvious to me now, god I wish I'd known that when I was 15, or 18, or even 21. Life sucks sometimes. It seems like everything has gone to hell and will never improve. You will feel like you have hit rock bottom and that there is no way you can ever escape that feeling. You will lose friends, you will cry, you will have your heartbroken and you will feel pain you hoped you'd never have to feel. It will suck. But remember, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Everything will get better and I promise you, you will be happy.

What people think don't matter - because the people who mind don't matter and the people that matter don't mind. You will love that quote growing up, but you won't quite understand the meaning of this for a while. Throughout life you will lose a lot of friends, you will worry constantly about what other people think of you. While it is easy for me to tell you this now, it won't be easy to understand. Don't worry about what people think of you so much. Go with your gut, do what you love, not what you think will be impressive. Life will be 100 times more enjoyable if you just do life for yourself.

Very much connected to point number 2 - be confident in who you are. This is something I am still learning to be and learning to follow, but you are a caring, creative, independent and strong young lady. You should be proud of that and of who you are. Who cares about the blemishes (easier said then done I know), what matters in on the inside and what is inside your heart and your head is more important than anything else - enjoy this.

Don't be afraid to take risks. You like to play it safe and stick with what you know and some times that is great. However...some of the best opportunities and experiences in life will come from the risk taking (calculated risks of course). Get out there and have a go. Say yes. Visit friends, make spontaneous decisions, get out of the house. You will thank yourself for it later, even if it is terrifying at the time. You only regret the opportunities that you don't take, so why not take them a little bit more. I have so many things that I wish that I had done and didn't - don't be like me.

Probably the most important of all five tips - have fun. Yes, life is terrifying and hard and scary, but that is why it is fundamental that you have fun. Enjoy and live in every moment. Savour the happy memories. Put the phone away and just experience the amazing wonder that is life. When things get tough, turn up the music and dance like a manic, sing your heart out and eat all the damn ice cream you want. Life is short - so make the most of every single second.
