Looking back on the last decade

It's come that time again - the end of another year. This year I feel like I blinked and suddenly the year was over. Did 2019 even really exist? I think it was a lie...but that's just me. I thought it would be only fitting to join in with the rest of the blogging population and reflect on the year that's been and the decade that is about to end.

2019 is over, which means the decade is done. I know a lot of people have thinking about everything that happened over the last 10 years, which naturally got me thinking. It's been a big 10 years, and while I constantly think that I haven't achieved all that much and there's so much more I want to do, I have actually done a lot in the last 10 years. Let's have a look back at the 10 best things that happened this decade.

1. I graduated from Year 12 and University: I did both of those things this decade. I survived the challenge of high school and then went on to get a degree. I am so lucky to live in a country where both of those things are achievable and easily accessible. I was even selected to give the Vote of Thanks speech at my uni grad, which was terrifying but also kind of cool...

2. I fell in love and married my best friend: that's a thing I did. I would never have guessed that I would be married at the end of this decade, but I'm so over the moon to be married to such an amazing man, and getting to go on all sorts of fun life adventures with him.

3. I went to Florence to study for 5 weeks: one of the best experiences in my life and I am SO glad I did it. I went over to Italy by myself to meet up with two girls I'd never met before in a city I'd never been and I had the time of my life. While it wasn't all easy (cue my meltdown when I was staying in Rome by myself and couldn't speak Italian and felt so alone), but I learnt so much that trip - about life and myself and everything in between.

4. I started a blog: I took the leap, bit the bullet and started The Life of Laura, and while it hasn't been all roses and cherry blossoms (shout out to all the haters out there), it has brought me so many amazing things! New friends across the world, amazing opportunities and experiences, and has helped me to venture into my creative side a lot more.

5. I travelled to Canada with my parents: and I cannot wait to go back. Possibly one of the prettiest places I have ever visited. We travelled through the Rocky Mountains, walked on a glacier and flew in a helicopter. It was one of the best experiences of my life.

6. I became a teacher: I graduated from uni and became a teacher. I now teacher music and maths and while it can be bloody hard at times (there's a reason for the saying 'never work with children or animals'), it is one of the most rewarding experiences. I love watching my students grow and engage with the world.

7. I performed with some amazing musicians and as a soloist: Few of you guys probably know that I am a musician. In 2014 I passed my AMusA in piano (which is basically an associate in performance), in 2013 I performed my first solo concert in preparation and was selected to perform at a concert highlighting outstanding year 12 music students. Kind of cool. I definitely miss playing as much as I used to.

8. I learned about my limits and how far is too far: Definitely one of the biggest lessons I've learnt in the last decade is what is too far. I learnt my limits and how to advocate for myself. I learnt when to push and take risks, and when to pull back. It's been so important for me to learn this lesson and learn how to put myself first.

9. We moved (twice): I moved in with Dave in 2017, just before we got married, and then moved again this year into a new place with a backyard and a real laundry and a fireplace. I couldn't be happier with where we are living at the moment. I hate moving, but I love this place!

10. We bought a puppy: Only something I've wanted for the last two decades, but we finally did it and I love little Becks so damn much and cannot wait to share more of him with you guys!

Now that we've had a brief look backwards, it's time to think forwards and I wanted to set a couple of quick New Year's Resolution's for 2020. I am keeping it simple and realistic for 2020. I want them to be open ended and achievable.

Resolution No 1. The lowest buy year possible. Basically I want to save save save and not spend as much. This means I won't be purchasing anything unnecessary. No beauty purchases, unless I have run out, and no clothing purchases, unless something happens to another of the same thing (e.g. breaking or unwearable). I have a budget set for groceries each week, as well as the other weekly expenses, but other than that I am aiming not to purchase anything else.

Resolution No 2. Keep it up with the gym and try to incorporate more clean eating into our weekly diet. No - this does not mean that I will not be eating anything that's bad for me, but I want to try and reduce the sugar and processed food that we have been loving this year. I want to try and make it to the gym at least 3 times a week as well. I want it to be the year we start making healthier choices.

Resolution No 3. Blog more. It was something I let drop this year. I haven't written as many blog posts, or really put as much effort into my blog and social media. I love it so much, but I definitely let it take a back seat a bit this year and I have missed it. A lot of it is definitely motivation, but I can't wait to get back into it (starting with this post!)

Are you a resolution setter? I usually am not. I either set super specific goals, or none at all. I wanted to hit somewhere in the middle this year with goals that are designed to be more like habits - achievable habits. I'd love to hear what you a resolving to do in 2020, or alternatively, what are some of the cool things you've achieved this decade. Let me know in the comments below xx
