Can you really have a skincare best friend?

So many skincare brands claim to be 'your skins best friend', with an array of benefits that are going to leave you with Kim Kardashian skin. How many of them really live up to the claims they are making? Honestly, very few. There's a new brand on the market, which is literally called BFF Skincare (standing for Best Face Forward). Is it your skins new best friend?

I was fortunate enough to trial this skincare range for 30 days before it was officially released, and (full disclosure) was paid to share about them on Instagram. This post is in no way sponsored, but might give you some indication about how much I enjoyed the products that I wanted to talk about them more (I also took a tonne of photos of the products and I love the photos and want to use them somewhere, so...you know...). If you are curious you can check out my three part IGTV series here (Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3). It includes a full week by week breakdown of how my skin went while using them.

Alright, let's talk about the brand. Best Face Forward is a clean, effective skincare brand designed to target and support blemish prone skin. The products are designed to help manage, calm and reduce blemishes so you can put your *Best Face Forward*. One of the big challenges with skincare designed for blemished skin types is that trying to manage breakouts during each stage - before, during and after (asking for a unicorn apparently). So they created the unicorn - gentle yet effective skincare, rich in nutrients to stop breakouts before their painful, annoying, and “can’t leave the house” tracks. Then sooth and minimise them when they decide to rock up. The whole range is paraben, SLS and peroxide free, while also being cruelty free and 100% vegan. One thing that I was a huge fan of was that $1 from every purchase is donated to a charity of your choice (from a selection including Greenpeace, To Write Love on Her Arms and PETA).

The range consists of three products and some pimple patches. You can buy them all separately or as a '30 Day Fresh Face Pack' (for a total of $89, saving $12).

Purifying Cleanser* $24

The foaming gel cleanser is designed to manage and deal with blemish-prone skin - and all the annoying things that come with it, like inflammation, scarring, dryness, excess oil, soreness, and breakouts. A great start to your beauty routine, it’s gentle on your skin but works its butt off when you need it to.

This is the product I was most apprehensive about. I. Do. Not. Like. Foaming. Cleansers. As soon as I read that it was foaming I was instantly apprehensive. Foaming cleansers do nothing but dry me out. Except for this one. This one is the exception. It is a light foaming cleanser, which didn't dry my skin out all. It is almost like a gel cleanser and it worked really well to remove the final residue of my make up and leave my skin feeling clean and smooth. I do still use a balm or oil to remove my make up, because I don't find this is super effective for that, but this is the perfect second cleanse.

The key ingredients in it are a huge win for me. It contains Aloe Vera and Green Tea (both of which I have always found to be extremely calming), Finger Lime, BHA (aka Salicylic Acid, which is amazing for acne prone skin) and Licorice Extract. It was great at helping to cleanse my skin and help reduce inflammation, without irritating it - something that a lot of acne based products are not good at.

Clarifying Toner* $29

Rich in pore-refining and pore-cleaning ingredients, our toner’s a powerful tool in the war against breakouts and blackheads. For one, it helps  stop them before they start; minimising excess oils, dissolving trapped debris, bacteria, sebum, and dead skin cells. Then it works to keep your skin hydrated and clean – not clogged - whilst minimise scarring.

Almost two months on and I am still using this product and loving it. It contains SO MANY amazing ingredients, a lot of which are some of my favourites for getting my skin in check (I'll get to those in a second). It's still not irritating on the skin at all. I personally found that I didn't have any tingling or feelings of irritation. HOWEVER, if you haven't used AHA and BHA's before (aka your acid ingredients), then I would highly recommend introducing this slowly (starting with every other night and building it up to every day). While the dosage is not super high, it may irritate younger skin types or those not as used to acids. I think it's a product like this that has been missing from so many skincare ranges designed for acne products. It's the perfect mix of exfoliation, without stripping the skin, and helping to rehydrate and leaving your looking fresh and glowy.

I apply this by pouring a small amount into my hands and then patting into the skin. You can use it on a cotton pad too, but I found that more product was wasted that way and it wasn't as effective.

Now lets chat about the ingredients. It also contains Green Tea and Aloe Vera, which helps to reduce irritation and inflammation (including redness and swelling in the skin), and BHA's, including Salicylic Acid which is great for getting deep into your pores. On top of that it also contains AHA's to help break down and exfoliate the skin without harsh scrubbing, Vitamin C to bring that glow back into your skin, and Hyaluronic Acid, which is found in your body naturally, and is designed to rehydrate the skin, giving it a more supple, soft and smiley feel.

Balancing Serum$39

This serum is a new way to love your skin. Rich in handpicked nutrients, it’ll minimise breakouts and help your skin absorb nutrients – without clogging your pores. Leaving your skin seriously hydrated and nourished. And you happy because you’re helping your skin stay healthy, balanced, and blemish free.

Of all the products this was probably my favourite one. It is also the most expensive and the one that ran out the fastest, so not a winning combination but totally worth it. If you're curious about how long it lasted me - a few days after finishing the '30 day challenge' the serum ran out. I was using it very generously, which is why I think I got the results I did, but it did mean it ran out faster. It is a light weight serum, almost watery in texture. I didn't find that I needed to apply a moisturiser on afterwards, however if you have drier skin you will probably find that you do (yes I know I have dry skin but it wasn't so bad while I was trying the range).

The ingredients in this serum are very similar to the other two products. AHA's, BHA's, Aloe Vera and Hyaluronic Acid, which do the same things as described above. It also contains Niacinamide, also known as Vitamin B3, helps your skin repair and recover from things like cell damage, pigmentation, congestion, blemishes, and scarring. Increases hydration, naturally making skin smoother, stronger, brighter, and less irritated.

Pimple Patches* $19

You know what makes your pimple worst? Squeezing, poking, and stressing. You know what makes it better? Putting one of these little stickers on it. Our formula penetrates deep into your skin, clearing out trapped oil and sebum, minimising infection, and nourishing your skin with anti-inflammatory, anti-embarrassment ingredients. Giving you better skin and a happier you in under 24 hours. Word.

I have to admit I've never had much success with pimple patches. I've heard some people absolutely love them, but I never saw much improvement when I used them. These pimple patches were the first time I ever really saw any improvement/change in my blemishes while using pimple patches. They work best when used on white head pimples (a pimple where you can already see the pus forming under the skin) - you simple cleanse and tone your skin, then pop a patch on over the top. Then you leave them on for a while (I usually leave them on over night) and it will help to extract the white head and then help your blemish heal faster. With these, I have started squeezing my blemishes less and have, as a result, had less scarring from my spots. While it doesn't work on every pimple, some pimples do need this applied a couple of nights in a row, it does work.

You can get a free set of the Pimple Patches to try by visiting this link here. I promise there is nothing in it for me and you don't have to pay shipping.

* * *

After using these three products for the 30 days (and the toner and cleanser for longer), I was shocked by how my skin improved. While you can still see blemishes and scarring in my after photos, the blemishes reduced significantly, and the products helped to make them less angry, all while healing them faster. The biggest change in my skin was the texture. It went from feeling scaley, with make up just not sitting right (*cue morning tears when you finish your make up and it almost looks worse than when you started...*). Afterwards my skin was SO smooth and soft, make up sat amazingly and it was glowing. I was honestly shocked by how quickly it had worked and how good my skin looked afterwards. I was disappointed that the serum ran out so quickly, because I do believe that I would've continued to see results if I had been able to continue using it.

I think this is the perfect range for teens who are starting to get blemishes, or those who are a bit older and still struggling with them. They are an amazing alternative to those harsh pharmacy sets that you can get. They don't contain bleach and won't dry your skin out. That was the big win for me - that they helped to reduce blemishes WITHOUT drying out your face. I have never tried an acne based product that does that (which is a bloody struggling if you have blemishes AND dry skin). It's also not super expensive for the ingredients and products you actually get. Would HIGHLY recommend this range. It gets a HUGE tick of approval from me. I might even go as far to say that it's my new skincare best friend.
