Haircare with a difference | Briogeo

A haircare brand on the up and up at the moment, Briogeo uses natural products to make a different to your hair. Briogeo is now available at Sephora and I finally got my hands on a few bits to try. Does it like up to the hype?

"Brio" is an Italian word that means "vibrant and full of life" - representing not only the bustling city in which the brand was born, but the thoughtfully energetic and artistic packaging that houses each formula.

"Geo" is a Latin word meaning "of Earth and nature," which represents the pure, yet potent, recipes of each formula.

Briogeo is 6-free hair care; meaning formulas are free of sulfates, parabens, phthalates, silicones, DEA and synthetic color. All products are 90 to 100 percent naturally derived and packaged in bottles that are both recycled and recyclable. Briogeo formulas are cruelty-free and mostly vegan and gluten free also. Since honesty means everything, they include the exact percentage of naturally derived ingredients (and its source) on the back of every bottle to take the guesswork out of ingredient labels.

I have picked up a few bits and pieces from Briogeo now and I thought I'd do a post to share my thoughts on them with you as I have had a lot of questions about the products. Some wins, some let downs, but let's just chat!

Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo | $63

This unique shampoo infuses Binchotan charcoal to draw impurities from the scalp and hair follicle to provide the foundation for optimal scalp health. Vegetable-derived micro-exfoliators remove dead skin cells and product build-up from the scalp to support a clean, balanced and healthy scalp. A cooling blend of peppermint and spearmint oils reduces scalp itchiness and tea tree oil has antiseptic and healing properties that reduce scalp irritation and inflammation. Coconut Oil provides superior moisturisation to the scalp to combat and prevent dryness and flakiness while super-vitamin, Panthenol, provides essential nutrients to strengthen the hair roots and shaft.

This is one of Briogeo's iconic products. Hair scrubs are really starting to make it big and Briogeo's is definitely a crowd favourite. As someone with oily roots, I do love the idea of hair scrubs, as they often do wonders for helping to reduce oil and make my hair feel cleaner. It is a lightweight shampoo that doesn't foam a whole lot, but has slight small grains to gently exfoliate your scalp. With Tea Tree and Peppermint, it helps to reduce irritation and inflammation on the scalp, while using Coconut oil to ensure that moisture is replaced and your hair and scalp stays hydrated.

First things first, the packaging sucks in my opinion. There's nothing I hate more than tubs in the shower. They are just really awkward to use - you have to get the lid open, get some product out and get it in your hair without getting a tub full of water. It's just awkward to use, and I think the shampoo consistency is thin enough that it would be ok in a tube type bottle instead.

As for the product itself, it works well. It definitely helps when my scalp is feeling irritated or is particularly oily. It helps to get your scalp super clean. I prefer to use it alongside another shampoo, for example using it as my first shampoo and a different shampoo as my rinse and repeat (aka second shampoo). The scent is lovely and I love the peppermint smell it leaves in your hair. It doesn't strip your hair, or leave it feeling dry. Like facial scrubs, I still only use it once a week, or once every couple of cleans so I don't over exfoliate.

In a nutshell: it didn't wow me, but it does work well to help reduce irritation and oiliness if they are your concerns. It smells good, but the packaging isn't great.

Don't Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask | $54

This mash works in minutes to restore essential hydration and natural vibrancy to dry, brittle, over-processed and otherwise lacklustre locks. Formulated with Briogeo’s unique NOVA Complex, this mask delivers an optimal blend of transformative nutrients from b-vitamins, rosehip and argan oils, collagen and algae extract to replenish damaged hair to a shiny, healthy and lustrous state. Its proven formula reduces breakage by up to 75% after three uses.

This is the cult favourite from Briogeo, one that everyone seems to rave about, and it was definitely the product I was most excited to try. I don't have many hair masks in my life, but I have been on the hunt for a good one. It contains rosehip, argan oil, collagen and algae extract which are designed to replenish damaged hair to shiny, healthy and lustrous state. It is also designed to help reduce breakages.

Again, much like the shampoo, the packaging gets a bit no from me. Also much like the shampoo, the texture is thin enough that it would work well in a tube. It is a lightweight mask that you don't need a huge amount of. Take about a 20 cent piece amount of product and massage it through the mid lengths and ends. You leave it in for 5-10 minutes, or up to 30 minutes under a hair dryer, before rinsing out.

I have to say that, unfortunately, I was not at all wowed by this product. I expected my hair to be a shiny and soft masterpiece after using, however I found that my hair didn't feel quite as nice as when I use my usual conditioner. My hair felt flat and oilier as well, which is the opposite of what I want. No matter how I used it, or how frequently, I was left feeling lack lustre. It may be that I don't have extremely damaged hair, so it's not necessarily designed for my hair, but it just wasn't for me.

In a nutshell: wasn't for me. It was nice, but my hair didn't love it and didn't look as good as when I use my regular conditioner. Won't be repurchasing.

Be Gentle, Be Kind Banana + Coconut Nourishing Superfoods Hair Duo Pack | $72

Be Gentle, Be Kind™ Banana + Coconut Nourishing Superfood Shampoo + Conditioner features a signature blend of hair essential oils that work to bring shine and lustre back into dull hair. The shampoo is 98% naturally derived and the conditioner is 87% naturally derived.

After my lack lustre experience with the scrub and mask, I wasn't super keen to buy any Briogeo products. However, when I heard Zoe Sugg talking about this duo, I couldn't pass it up. I am not a big fan of Banana's - the smell, the texture, the taste, not a fan of any of it. However, inside this duo, I am a MASSIVE fan!

Let's start with packaging. They come in these cute bottles that look like smoothie bottles, and is super easy to get the product out of. The scent does smell a bit like lolly bananas, rather than fresh bananas, but I love it. It's sweet but not overally strong, however it does last in your hair long enough that you will catch whiffs of it throughout the day.

The shampoo is a gel like mixture that foams well and makes it easy to get a good clean on your scalp. The conditioner is a thicker consistency, that I leave in my hair for a few minutes before rinsing. Following use, my hair feels so soft and looks shiny. Hydration is put back in and my hair smells incredible. Basically, they're a big win! I am loving them so much.

In a nutshell: they're amazing!! I am loving everything about them. They leave my hair felling and looking amazing, as well as smelling INCREDIBLE!

You can also buy the shampoo and conditioner separately.

I have had a bit of a mixed experience with Briogeo, but the new Banana + Coconut duo has definitely got me back on the back wagon. I am now curious to try some other products, so if you have tried anything from the brand, let me know!
