Winter Skincare Must Have's: Cleansers

Winter is definitely upon us. It's been cold and rather miserable in Canberra over the last few weeks. I don't know about you, but my skin is starting to take a beating, so it's time to pull out the winter skincare and step up my game. Welcome to my new week long series all about my winter must haves.

Every day this week I will be sharing my must haves for each part of my skincare routine. They are products that I trust and will be using throughout the colder months. Today's post is all about my top cleanser picks for winter.

Now, bear in mind that I have drier skin and through winter my skin gets quite temperamental while it is cold. I go for hydrating products designed to give my skin that boost to stop it from being dry, irritated and unhappy. While I have tried to include a variety of products in each of these posts, some may be less suited to oilier skin types than others.

When it comes to winter cleansers, I tend to stick to cleansing oils and balms over foaming gel cleansers, particularly in winter. I find that foaming and gel cleansers tend to dry my skin out (except for one, which you can read about in this post). I tend to pick cleansers that remove make up extremely well but leave my skin feeling hydrated and happy afterwards. All of these can be used to remove make up or to cleanse the skin, or, if you're anything like me, for both steps.

Couldn't not start with my favourite cleansing balm! Many of you have heard me talk about this cleanser before because I love it! Of all their cleansers, Clinique's Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm* is a cult favourite from the brand and for good reasons.

This makeup remover quickly dissolves eye and face makeup, leaving skin thoroughly cleansed. The non-greasy and non-drying formula leaves skin feeling comfortably clean. Ophthalmologist Tested. For all skin types.

It is a thick balm which comes in a large jar container. I simply take a small amount, warm it up between my hands and massage it into the skin. It melts into an oil formula that quickly and easily removes all traces of make up. I use this all year round and love it. It leaves my skin feeling so squeaky clean, but also hydrated. However, it doesn't leave my skin feeling oily or like I've just applied an oil, so it is a product that could be used for all skin types. It is one of my holy grail cleansers!
The new Nutrimetics Nutri-Rich Cleansing Balm* is a new addition to my skincare drawer, but one I have already fallen in love with. Anyone that has been a Nutrimetics for a long time will know that their iconic Nutri-Rich Oil is celebrating 50 year's this year. They have been expanding the Nutri-Rich range for a while now and their latest addition is definitely one of my favourites.

Melt away the day. This fusion gel-to-balm formula is enriched with Botanical Oils and our iconic signature blend of Apricot Oil to dissolve impurities and all traces of make-up. As the cleanser is massaged into wet skin, it gently transforms into a milky balm texture that leaves skin soothed, soft, nourished and supple.

This is the first cleansing balm that I have used in tube form and I have to say I love it. It is still a thick balm formula, but melts into the skin easily, removing every single trace of make up. It contains the iconic apricot scent that the rest of the Nutri-Rich range contains, which may be over powering for some, but I love it. I love that it leaves my skin feeling soft and hydrated, but also squeaky clean. Retailing for $39, it is a reasonably priced cleanser (but is currently on sale for $29 with a bonus muslin cloth that is fantastic) and worth every cent.

Remember when I said I didn't really like gel cleansers? Well here comes the exception. I grabbed a mini sized FRESH Soy Face Cleanser when they first released FRESH products on Sephora a few months ago. I finished the mini rather quick and had to grab a full size of the Limited Edition packaging while in Sydney recently.

Soy Face Cleanser for all skin types is an extra-gentle gel cleanser that instantly whisks away everyday impurities and makeup-even mascara-without stripping the skin of essential moisture. The multi-tasking formula also works to tone, soothe, and soften the skin for a radiant, healthy-looking complexion.

As I mentioned earlier, I don't tend to like gel cleansers, but this one is a big exception for me. It is potentially one of my favourite cleansers EVER! Big statement, I know, but trust me on this one. It is a super gentle cleanser that you can use to remove make up, even waterproof, and cleanse skin. It smells fresh and like a fancy salon cleanser that gets used when you get a luxe facial. It feels lovely on the skin and leaves your face feeling fresh, clean and soft, but not stripped. It does everything I want a cleanser to do, without the fuss. I tend to use it as my second cleanse and love it. It is perfect for all skin types through winter especially because it helps to calm the skin while removing make up, but isn't oily or drying. It's basically the perfect cleanser.

I love cleansing oils throughout winter, particularly to remove make up. They are easy to use and are hydrating on the skin, giving them that little boost that you need. As I had quite a few recommentations, I didn't want to bore you with quite as many details, but if I have missed any important facts, please feel free to leave your question in the comments below.

Deeply cleanse and purify without drying out your skin using Cosmedix Purity Solution Deep Cleansing Oil. All traces of environmental debris may be lifted easily from the skin. Melia Azadirachta Extract (Neem extract) removes excess oil, makeup, sunscreen and environmental impurities while nourishing Argan, Moringa and Olive Oils help to deliver key nutrients and antioxidants to keep skin clear and radiant.

I have only been using this cleanser for a short period, but I love it. It is a lightweight cleansing oil that melts over the skin easily. You only need a small amount of this one to remove all traces of make up and leave your skin feeling squeaky clean and hydrated.

Infused with soothing jasmine flower extract, hydrating kukui nut oil and a blend of Italian olive, organic sunflower and jojoba oils, this quick yet effective oil cleanser dissolves surface impurities and makeup without leaving the skin feeling dry or tight.

This has been a favourite of mine for months now and would probably be my favourite cleansing oil. It, much like the Cosmedix, is extremely light weight and easily to spread over the skin. While the $67 price tag seems like a lot, I only need one pump to remove all my make up, meaning that the bottle lasts for months! It is gentle and calms the skin while removing make up extremely well. It leaves my skin feeling hydrated and soft, everything I need through winter.

The first step in Tatcha's signature double-cleanse ritual, this botanical cleansing oil acts to effectively dissolve all traces of makeup (even waterproof!), debris and impurities to leave skin comfortably clean and silky soft. A moisture-replenishing blend of Japanese camellia oil and rice bran oil come together, alongside Tatcha's antioxidant-rich Hadasei-3 complex, to purify, smooth and utterly beautify skin.

This is definitely a luxury cleanser and is very different to the others on the list. It is still an extremely calming cleansing oil, however the formula is much thicker than the others. I find I need a couple of pumps and that the cleanser needs to be warmed up a little in the hands first, however, your skin will love you for it. I have found this to be one of the most hydrating cleansing oils I have used, and is my go to when my skin is in desperate need of a hydration boost.

This lightweight essential oil cleanser emulsifies with water to a cleansing milk, gently, yet effectively dissolving even the hardest to remove makeup and impurities without over-drying, leaving skin clean and replenished.

The perfect before bed cleanser. This cleansing oil is enriched with lavender and evening primrose to leave you feeling calm, relaxed and ready for a good nights sleep. Not only that, but it is extremely hydrating and calming on the skin. If you are after a cleanser with the added benefits of aromatherapy, than this cleanser might just be what you need. At $48 it is also the cheapest cleansing oil on the list (added bonus). Again, I find that one pump is enough to cover my whole face so it will last you a while too!

There it is, a rather succinct list of my top cleanser picks for winter. Have I missed any? Let me know your go to cleanser in the comments below. Stay tuned for tomorrow's Winter Skincare Must Have's: Serums and Face Oils.
