The Active Solution | Amperna

As many of you know, I have struggled with eczema and acne for a while now, and in the past couple of years they have become more of a concern for me. My challenge has been finding products that help reduce acne, but also don't dry out my skin further. I have just been introduced to a new skincare brand designed for sensitive skin. Introducing AMPERNA®! AMPERNA® is a new skincare brand committed to creating active products specifically formulated for sensitive skin.
I am going to be trying out the range for the next month, but wanted to introduce the range you before I started. The best way to introduce AMPERNA® to you is to hear it from the founder, Kiri Yanchenko. So I asked her a couple of questions to discover why she created the range.

Why did you decided to create the AMPERNA®  skincare range?

“I was interested in art, design, fashion and a healthy lifestyle from an early age. After finishing a Fine Arts Degree at Sydney College of the Arts, Sydney I completed a Graphic Design Diploma. After a few years in the packaging design industry, I broadened my skill set by studying Fashion Styling and UX Design whilst freelancing full time. I has over 15 years experience in the design industry with skills across project management, end to end delivery of content, leadership and strong technical abilities. I have run Yanchenko Designs for 16 years. I also began a fashion blog in 2012; and got to work with some great brands and was also able to visit Fashion Week in Sydney and London.

When I was 30, I developed severe complications from stress and medication whilst looking after my father, who died very young. I developed pustular acne and dropped over 15 kilos. This experience lead to an increased interest in health and wellbeing; I now practice a holistic lifestyle and am a proud to be a Holistic Skin Health Advocate.

When I developed perioral dermatitis, I began a health and beauty blog “Set to Glow” which was well received by her followers. The blog was started to review products and document my journey to clear and healthy skin. Following this, I was inspired to create AMPERNA®, a simple but effective range of products suitable for even the most sensitive and problematic skin.”
So, what is AMPERNA®?

“AMPERNA® is a new Active Probiotic Skincare Range that contains no nasties, is cruelty free and made in Australia. We've just launched after 5 years of market research, product development and testing. AMPERNA® is honest and transparent – we want to help people feel comfortable in their own skin. We believe in Holistic Skin Health which includes eating well, staying hydrated, exercising and practicing mindfulness – as well as using the right skincare products of course.

I have been through a challenging time with acne and perioral dermatitis over the past few years and finally managed to get it under control through a combination of diet and changes to my skincare regime.

While I was looking for ways to clear my skin, I realised that there was nothing available in Australia that was really effective for people with sensitive/problem skin. Our range is for everybody; it is suitable for all skin types and has been tested on eczema, dermatitis, perioral dermatitis, rosacea and acne prone skin. The range features probiotics as its main active ingredient and is the first of its kind in Australia.”

Where did the name AMPERNA® come from?

“I actually used word association to make it up. I spend two months researching, pulling words together. Using a dictionary and thesaurus etc to come up with the name. I had to make sure it was available to trademark and that it sounded really great to say to. In the end AMP is from Ampoule. A small sealed glass capsule containing a liquid, especially a measured quantity ready for use. ERNA is from Derma or the skin. Another term for dermis. However AMPERNA® sounded better.

Who can/should use AMPERNA®?

“We're for EVERYBODY! The AMPERNA® range is suitable for all skin types and has been tested on eczema, dermatitis, perioral dermatitis, rosacea and acne prone skin. One of the things we’ve loved about developing AMPERNA® is hearing stories of how our products made people feel really good. Not only are they easy to apply, AMPERNA® products work; meaning you can take back control of your health.”
Do the products target specific skin issues or concerns?

“All sorts of issues as I have quite a few issues myself. We have had great feedback from people with: Dry Sensitive Skin, Mature Skin, Pigmentation Prone Skin, Ezcema Prone Skin, Perioral Dermatitis Prone Skin, Rosacea Prone Skin, Acne Prone Skin and Sunburnt Skin. Although I would recommend wearing a hat and sunscreen and not getting burnt!”

What would be your top tips for keeping your skin looking as good as it can be?

“A holistic approach to skincare is based on treating your whole body well – including your mind. Exercise, hydration, mindfulness, a good diet and sun protection can help your skin look amazing, as well as improving your overall wellbeing. As well as using the right regime of products with only the right ingredients.

If there was one tip I could impart - well two actually. they would be:

1) Wear a hat!! I have carried an umbrella and worn a hat since a very young age.
Sun exposure is responsible for most of the visible aging of your skin—far more than all other factors combined. Yes, UV rays from the sun are the primary cause of wrinkles, pigmentation, sun spots, reduced skin elasticity, the degradation of skin texture, and many other signs of skin aging.

2) And listen to what your skin and your body needs.
Since being so sick I am quite aware of what goes on for me. And if I need a rest, need to drink water because my skin is dry or my mouth feels dry I listen. When I was ill I had to get rid of any stressors from my life such as bad food, stress, harsh chemicals etc in order to start my healing process.”

The Range

Now, let me introduce you to the AMPERNA® skincare range. The range contains a unique probiotic complex which acts as a protective layer on the skin, helps boost healthy looking skin and helps calm & soothe skin. Probiotics also help defend the skin against age-accelerating environmental stressors. They also contain a range of interesting ingredients. I could do a whole blog post just about those, but Kiri has created a helpful guide about the ingredients. Click here to find out more about the ingredients in the AMPERNA® range.

AMPERNA® Ultra Gentle Soothing Cleanser is a gel that is activated by water - it is refreshingly gentle and lathers to a fine foam. It rinses clean without leaving an irritating residue or upsetting the skin's PH levels.

Step 1 is always a cleanse. I don't typically love gel cleansers, but I am very intrigued by this one. I have used it once already and was pleasantly surprised by how soft and clean my skin felt after using it. I often find that gel cleansers dry out my skin, but somehow I don't see this one doing that.

This lightweight cationic moisturiser contains a probiotic, ceramides, hyaluronic acid and emollients to nourish the skin and help protect it from free radical damage. AMPERNA® Lightweight Soothing+ Emulsion contains a groundbreaking probiotic formula, along with ceramides, hyaluronic acid and emollients to nourish the skin and help protect it from free radical damage.

I will be using this morning and night after the serums (REPAIR). I am always after hydrating and soothing serums through winter, because they are two things that my skin struggles with in the colder months.

This gentle exfoliating lotion contains 10% glycolic acid (AHA) and antioxidants to calm redness and improve the skin’s texture. Our 10% Pro+ Resurfacing Lotion is first chemical exfoliant to market that has been specially formulated for use by first time users and even the most sensitive skins.

Um glycolic acid? Yes please! I am already super excited about this product, because my skin seems to love glycolic acid and I love how it leaves my skin feeling and looking. I will be using this at night time to help exfoliate my skin overnight, with the aim to build it up to twice a day by the end of the month. I've also used this once and so far so good, no irritation or discomfort and I love how it feels on my skin. Fingers crossed this product helps with my blemishes and texture.

This potent, deeply hydrating serum soothes the skin while visibly targeting dullness, uneven skin tone, wrinkles and fine lines. Our Pro+ Vitamin C Hyaluronic Serum contains high levels of hyaluronic acid and antioxidants to help restore smoothness & suppleness to your skin.

Oz Product Junkie has got me all excited about Vitamin C at the moment, so I am very excited about this! Glowy skin here I come! I also love hyaluronic acid, so basically this and the exfoliate lotion are going to be real winners. I will be applying this straight after cleansing, following it with the Soothing Emulsion.

This deeply restorative formula cools and soothes irritated skin and calms redness. The copper and zinc gluconates help to limit the spread of harmful bacteria and replenish the skin barrier. Our Probiotic+ DS Soothing Serum has been tested on rosacea redness with positive results.

As I mentioned earlier, sensitivity is a big concern for me in winter, and post wedding make up I see my skin needing some calming. This sounds like the perfect product for that. You can use this morning or night, or as you need (I haven't decided when exactly I will be using this, but I'll let you know in my next post!)

This is my skin before starting to use AMPERNA®. I will be using the products for the next month and will be touching base again once the month is over. While my skin is looking pretty good at the moment after all the wedding prep, I am sure that after a day of full make up my skin won't be looking it's best post-wedding (yes, I am writing this post pre-wedding). I am hoping that it will help rehydrate my skin, reduce my blemishes and keep my skin calm in it's typical crazy winter panic. I have read some amazing results from the AMPERNA®  range, so I am so excited to be testing these out.

Stay tuned, on the 20th June I will be sharing my full review on the whole range and how it worked for my skin xx
