Agento: Face Scrub

Exfoliants and scrubs are becoming more popular in every day skincare routines. While you can go to a salon for an 'extreme' chemical or physical peel, we both know that that is pricey and well and truly out of some our price ranges. Also we are all busy people and can't always fit a salon appointment in.

My concern when it comes to exfoliating is that so many scrubs and exfoliants that you can pick up for home use contain so many ingredients that aren't necessarily good for my skin, and so many scrubs terrify me. Agento get's me. The founder of Agento was late to the skincare game and quickly realised that face scrubs were complicated with 138 ingredients, all of which sounded poisonous. So they went to their old man, a chemist, and asked him to help develop a product that worked, but with a small number of ingredients. It had to be simple, it had to be pronounceable, and it had to be environmentally friendly. 'All I want is a face scrub that cleans my skin and leaves it feeling great once it’s washed off, and doesn’t do any damage on the way down the drain.'

Agento Face Scrub* is a completely natural scrub that epitomises ease. It is easy to use, kind to the environment and most importantly your skin. It is also free of microbeads, fragrances, colourants, harsh solvents and detergents. To top it all off it is also cruelty free!

So lets chat about the ingredients. There's a total of four ingredients. YES, four. Information taken from Agento.

  • Pumice - A very lightweight volcanic rock that has apparently been used for a millennia as an exfoliate and skin cleanser. You learn something new every day, I would never have thought to use volcanic rock on my skin! Pumice gives Agento a great feel and colour when you rub it on your skin, you can feel it work its magic.
  • White Australian Clay - I love clay, it is one of my current favourite ingredients. For centuries, people from around the world have taken advantage of the natural cleansing and healing properties of clay. The clay is used to draw grease and dirt out of your skin and leaves it feeling soft, leaving your skin feeling as smooth as silk (the reason I love it, clearly!)
  • Sea Salt - Salt helps to cleanse pores deeply, balance oil production and thwart bacteria that can instigate breakouts and acne. Like pumice, salt is a gentle natural exfoliate that sloughs off dead skin. It also has minerals to soften skin and restore hydration.
  • Activated Carbon - absorbs dirt and oil and deeply cleanses your skin. Because activated charcoal removes toxins, it can help reduce the instances of acne and other skin impurities you might suffer from. It also works wonders for completely removing make up. Say whaaaat?! That sounds amazing.

Four ingredients, but wow they are good. Simple, but sound super effective. I've used a number of scrubs that use Sea Salt, and a number of face masks that use Clay and love both of these ingredients. However I was particularly intrigued by the pumice and the activated carbon. Two ingredients I've honestly never come across before.

So how does it work? Well it's a powder based scrub. So first, you need to wet both your face and your hands. Then you take a spoonful of the scrub (luckily it comes with a spoon!) in your hands, mix into a paste, and then massage onto your face for about 30 seconds. Then leave for a minute, and rinse off. Because it can be a little bit messy, I find it best using it right before a shower and then washing off when I get into the shower.

It is quite a 'grainy'/coarse scrub. I assume that comes from a mix of the Pumice and of course the Sea Salt. The clay helps to forms the paste and in all honesty it reminded me a little of the Dermalogica Charcoal Face Mask, but a little thicker and coarser (and far cheaper). While it's a scrub, it feels like a face mask, however it is much quicker, as you only need to leave it on for a minute instead of 10+. Makes for a super quick facial!

Now what I know you're all wanting to know about - the results. Look, it's safe to say that I am in love with this scrub. It is so easy to use, and really does leaving your skin feeling amazing. I have been using it two times a week for the last three-four weeks and my skin has been looking and feeling amazing. The immediate results are soft, refreshed feeling skin. However, I've noticed my skin tone evening out and my acne and acne scars have greatly reduced over that time as well. While powders can often be hard to use, especially in packaging like the Agento, I have found it nothing but easy to use. Not being a chemist, I can't tell you the real reason that all these ingredients work so well together, all I know they definitely work together extremely well to create a really good quality scrub.
