Love & Leaves is a natural skincare company from the US who makes a variety of skincare, but really do specialise in scrubs and exfoliants. They use sugar and salt in their scrubs to help with the exfoliation. Why sugar and salt? Sugar is a natural humectant, drawing moisture from the environment into the skin. It also helps to break old skin cells and create new ones. Salt helps to balance oil production and bacteria, which helps with multiple skin issues.
Chocolate Cake Scrub*
Yes, you read that correct. Chocolate. Cake. Scrub. Amazing. I know! But sorry, while it has lots of natural ingredients, you can't eat it.
Let's start with the ingredients (taken from the Love & Leaves website):
- Theobroma Cacao (pure cacao powder) - Yes, there is chocolate in there! Apparently flavanols found in chocolate help protect the skin against UV damage, which is a hugeeee plus in my books!
- Organic Honey - Why? Well it's extremely hydrating, moisturising and full of antioxidants. Also it's antibacterial products help as an acne treatment, which I definitely need help with!
- Untreated Sea Salt - As stated earlier, Salt naturally balances oil production and eliminates bacteria.
- Vanilla Planifolia (pure vanilla extract) - Vanilla is an anti-inflammatory (What?! How did I not know this!), which helps to soothe and calm irritated skin.
First impressions: OH. MY. GOD. THIS SMELLS AMAZING! CAN I EAT IT?! No Laura, you can't. It does smell exactly like chocolate cake, not that cheap rubbish, but expensive, rich and delicious chocolate cake. The consistency also reminds me a lot of chocolate cake - spongey and moist. Essentially, it is chocolate cake in a jar, only you can't eat it. It eve\n comes with a little spatula to get it out of the jar!
The scrub itself isn't super harsh. Compared to coffee scrubs, or other sugar and salt scrubs I've used, it is isn't as coarse and almost melts into the skin as you massage it in. Some of you might not like that, and want a really coarse scrub that really gets into the skin, but I love how it scrubs and then melts in. I actually feeling like it is removing the grim from my skin, but not breaking down skin barriers, instead leaving them feeling refreshing and hydrated. Nothing worse than a scrub that just strips your skin and leave it feeling dry.
My final verdict? I love this scrub. I have honestly found nothing negative about the scrub. I love how my skin feels after I use it - hydrated! It has really helped with my eczema as well and if I am feeling particularly itchy, I simply massage a little of this on my skin and it helps to instantly soothe my skin. As for little lumps and bumps that I get from eczema as well, I have noticed a huge reduction in these after using this scrub. This has been a real winner for me. I haven't tried it on my face, where I tend to get most of my acne, so I can't comment too much on acne, but I am planning on trying it out, my skin has just been a little stressed and sensitive recently, so I am waiting for it to settle down first. Even if it doesn't help with my acne, it has blown me away in every other way, so I won't be disappointed at all.
If you're looking for a good, gentle scrub that smells good enough to eat, this is the one for you. Love & Leaves also have a variety of other scrubs to suit basically every skin type and need! All of them natural and chemical free. You will be sure to find one to suit your needs!

DeleteHey! I didn't know that about sugar! I thought it was just used in scrubs because it was granular. Also, I really didn't know any of these delightfully-smelling ingredients could benefit the skin like that. Great post!

DeleteWow - this legitimately sounds edible! I love a good sugar scrub, but I didn't know that it was a natural humectant! Very interesting :)
