Haircare for the Modern Woman

You might remember recently, I shared a post where I explained that I have completely changed up my haircare and I am no longer using drugstore haircare products (if you're interested in why I made this decision, check out the post). Since then, I have had a lot of questions about what haircare products I'm using. Well here it is - Haircare for the Modern Woman (me).
There are a couple of main brands I have been using (as I mentioned) a couple of main brands - Bumble and Bumble, Sachajuan, R&Co and Oribe. I have also added a couple of GHD haircare products into my routine as well that I've been loving.

Shampoo and Conditioner

It took me a while to come around to expensive shampoo and conditioner. I found that it took a while for my hair to get used to it and I didn't get that instant soft feeling after the first wash. However, almost two months on and my hair is looking and feeling so much healthier than it used to be. I find that I am using less shampoo than previously, but slightly more conditioner (because it leaves my hair feeling amazing). I feel like I've finally found a balance to using up shampoo and conditioner at the same time for the first time ever ha! All of these were recommended to me by my wonderful hairdresser - Kate from Kate Lily Dressing Hair

Bumble and bumble : Colour Minded Shampoo and Conditioner

This ultra-mild cleanser protects color's integrity and prolongs vibrancy and brilliance with our very own Color Preserving Complex, designed to prevent fading and eliminate color washout. Sulfate free cleansing helps prevent color washout while revealing lustre.

This was the first shampoo and conditioner that I picked up for coloured hair. I didn't enjoy it as much when I first bought it. My hair didn't feel as soft post washing. It looked good, but I didn't necessarily feel like it was leaving my hair feeling amazing. However, over time it has grown on me and I love it. It doesn't have a strong scent to it, but it now, leaves my hair feeling squeaky clean and really soft. It also has been helping keeping the colour looking good for longer (which let's be real, is my goal at the moment because I am loving my colour!)

Sachajuan : Colour Protect Shampoo and Conditioner

Sachajuan Colour Protect is a special care formula with Ocean Silk Technology to create healthy shine and protect the colour. This gives a long lasting care for coloured hair. Leaves hair with bounce and a silky shine.

After buying this one, which I bought after the Bumble and bumble range, I instantly fell in love. It left my hair feeling so soft and looking so shiny, while also protecting my hair. I felt like these two took less time for my hair to get used to. It was these two products that sold high end haircare for me. If you're not sure where to start with high end haircare, I would 120% recommend these two!

Oribe : Bright Blonde Shampoo and Conditioner

Containing optimial levels of violet pigment to correct brassiness and yellow tones while brightening natural highlights for hair that is healthier, shinier, and lit from within.
This blonde brilliance formula is paraben, sulphate and sodium chloride free, vegan, cruelty-free, gluten-free and dermatologist tested. Suitable for all hair types, including colour and keratin treated hair.

After my second visit to Kate, when she added way more blonde into my hair, she recommended that I pick up a blonde shampoo and conditioner, which game me the perfect excuse to grab these two. I have been eyeing off Oribe for over a year now, so I was excited that I finally had the drive to order some haircare. I have been absolutely loving these two. Yes, they are definitely luxurious products and come with a price tag to match, but I find I only need a small amount to leave my hair looking and feeling amazing. It has really helped keep my blonde looking blonde and not brassy. I would recommend being very careful with them though, I dropped the conditioner in the shower after the first use and broke the lid, so it's a bit of a pain now. Lucky the product is worth it. I really want to get the Bright Blonde Radiance and Repair Treatment and the Masque for Beautiful Colour now as well.

Treatment

This is a step I never used before dying my hair, but now it's probably my favourite step.

 Evo : Fabuloso Pro

This is a product I picked up at my hairdresser after my first cut and colour. It's essentially a mask, treatment and toner all in one. You have the treatment in the bottle already, then Kate mixed in my hair colour before I left (hence the bright purple colour). Now I only use this once every couple of weeks or when my hair is looking particularly brassy. It just helps to boost the colour and keep it looking fresh.

There are a couple of ways you can use this. I tend to use it in place of my conditioner most of the time and will pop it in for 5 minutes in the shower (while I shave my legs or have a scrub), then just rinse out. You can also pop it in for 20 minutes like a hair mask. The trick is make sure you put it through all of your hair, because it has dye in it.

I am obsessed with how good my hair feels after using the treatment. It is so light (which is a dream for thick hair people), soft and shiny and it honestly feels like I've just stepped out of the hair dresser. It has become my favourite product in my routine, even if I don't use it all that often.

Sachajuan : Intensive Hair Oil

Sachajuan Intensive Hair Oil repairs your hair while adding extreme shine. The hair absorbs it weightlessly without leaving residue. Contains argan oil and sea buckthorn oil, for healthy, nourished hair.

I have never used a hair oil until now. Anyone who knows me will know I have struggled with oily hair my whole life and hair oils terrified me because I was sure they would just make the problem worse. When Kate told me I needed this, I knew I should trust her and made the purchase. I have not looked back. This little gem is incredible and a life saver. I pop it in my hair when it's damp or dry, depending on whether I can be bothered to blow dry it or not. I only use one pump (little bit goes a long way, it will last me forever) and take it through my mid lengths and ends. I always pop it in after using heat because it help to keep my hair looking soft and shiny, rather than looking like I just attacked it with heat. I also pop it in if I have been out in the wind all day at school and it instantly softens and tames my hair. I haven't had any problems with extra oiliness, but my hair looks amazing.

Styling Products

This is another category I never used. When have I ever styled my hair? Since before getting it cut and coloured? Never. Having super thick hair makes it a nightmare to style and when it was long I just couldn't be bothered with it. Now that it's short, I am loving curling it and adding texture to it (it also helps that I have found the right products to help).

R&Co :  One Prep Spray

We think of ONE as a primer or a base coat: It protects your hair from everything else you’re going to do to it. ONE evens out the porosity in your hair so that products adhere evenly. It’s also useful as a revitalizer. Good for: Detangling, light conditioning and for hair stylists as a cutting lotion.

This is the lazy girls hair spray - perfect for everything. I use this magic spray for two purposes: detangling and heat protection. A quick spray through damp or dry hair and away I go. It is light, doesn't leave a residue through my hair, but helps to protect and revitalise it.

GHD : Heat Protect Spray*

Designed to provide an invisible barrier against everyday heat damage on damp or dry hair, this lightweight spray can be layered with other styling products to create the result you desire. Hair is left looking smooth, shiny and healthy without feeling sticky or weighed down.

This is a newbie to me, but another product I've been loving. I use this over the R&Co when I'm going to be using a lot of heat for my style (so if I am going for a super sleek straight look or a curl) because I find it just a little bit more heavy duty and works better for the days where I will be using more heat. It doesn't leave a sticky residue or any residue at all through my hair and doesn't way it down either, but after styling my hair still looks shiny and soft, not like it's been attacked with heat.

DNA Organics : Voludust Powder

Full volume, high definition dry powder formula designed for maximum hydroabsorbtion.

I have used a couple of volume powders before but they always left my hair super sticky and oily (and we already know that was a problem). This powder has changed the game for me. Yes, it does have a little bit of stickiness to help get the volume, but if I was to run a comb through my hair at the end of the day it almost all disappears. Adding a little bit into my roots (near my part) and then giving a bit of a massage, gives my hair sooo much volume and texture. This is my go-to on second day hair, just to give it a bit of oompf and make it look less flat.

R&Co : Aircraft Pomade Mousse

A mousse with a split personality. Perfect for creating second-day texture and separation while retaining body.

While I love the DNA Voludust, sometimes I can't be bothered with the effort it takes, so I reach for this product instead. I take one pump of the mousse (not very much), massage it a little between my hands and then massage it through my hair. It helps give a nice healthy shine while giving it a little bit of extra volume (but not super intense). It is perfect for that second-day flat hair look that needs an extra boost. P.S You can win a can of this in my latest giveaway, head over to IG for more information!

GHD : Curl Hold Spray

Designed to help achieve dynamic curls and waves when heat styling, this lightweight spray conditions hair and protects against heat damage. The frizz-fighting formula eliminates static, enhances natural shine and helps set the curl.

Because I have quite thick hair, I find that getting curls or waves to stay in my hair, so this product really intrigued me. At first I wasn't sure, but I used it for about the third time over the weekend (and used it a little bit more intensely than previous times) and was really impressed by how well my curls held and how good my hair looked after curling. Typically after doing a curl my hair will look frizzy and a bit straw like (thanks to all the heat) but at the end of the day my hair still felt soft, like I'd just washed it, but was still curly. I will be talking more about this in my upcoming styling posts.

Hair Tools

Possibly the most important category since cutting my hair short again. I used to be so lazy with styling and blow drying my hair, but since cutting it's made life a lot easier. I have two hair tools that I can't live without anymore.

Dyson : Supersonic Hair Dryer

Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer is the hair dryer re-thought. It's turned convention on its head - with the powerful motor in the handle instead of the head, rebalancing the weight and shape. It is acoustically tuned via a noise vibration reduction system and has negative ions to help reduce static. The high velocity airflow dries hair fast. A microprocessor measures the air temperature 20 times every second and controls heat, helping to prevent extreme heat damage and protect natural shine.

Now full disclosure, I won this in a giveaway about two years ago, I can't say it is a hairdryer that I would spend $500 on, but I love it. I had a GHD hair dryer as well, but I prefer the Dyson over it and ended up selling my GHD. It is a really innovative hair dryer that I find dries my hair really quickly but also leaves it looking shiny and fresh. While it does claim to be quieter than other hair dryers, I wouldn't say it is extremely quiet, but it does blow out a lot of air at once. I barely touched my Dyson until recently and now I'm a little bit obsessed with it and how well it works.

GHD : Serene Pearl Platinum Styler

The ghd platinum contains tri-zone technology to intuitively deliver safer-for-hair heat for ultimate styling results in one stroke. Three intelligent sensors in each styler plate consistently maintain the optimum styling temperature, reducing hair breakage by over 50%* and increasing shine by 20%**.

The day after I cut my hair I went out and bought a new hair straightener. Sounds ridiculous and if I am honest I didn't need one, but it was over $100 off and that was too good an offer to resist. However, I am so glad to have a GHD back in my life. I have been using cheaper hair straighteners up until now and I have to say that they do not even compare to how good the GHD is. It curls, straighteners and styles, while leaving my hair looking shiny and soft. It's easy to use and I love that it turns itself off when I forget. I picked up the LE Serene Pearl finish (because again, it was on sale and cheaper than the original black platinum), but it is the same as the original Platinum styler. Anyway, what I am saying is that I think the GHD's are unparalleled when it comes to styling and I swear by mine now.

There it is friends, a comprehensive list of all the products I have been using on my hair recently. I will be doing a post in the coming weeks of some of the ways I like to style my bob/lob cut, so stay tuned for that! I will be talking a little bit more about how I put these products to work as well. What are some of your must have haircare products? Let me know what I need to try in the comments below xx
