Affordable Foundations || My Top Four!

7:00 am

It has been a long time since I have used a drugstore foundation. A few years ago I was sworn off them after a severe allergic reaction. Also, nothing lived up to my high end foundations at the time, so I just decided that it wasn't worth it. However, earlier this year I started hearing amazing reviews on a number of affordable foundations and I decided it was time to dive back into the drugstore foundation pool to see whether they had improved since I lasted tried them. I wanted to share my current top four affordable foundation options with you, as I have been so impressed with these lately.

A little bit about my skin first: I have dry skin at the moment, and am going for foundations that give my skin a gorgeous glow, rather than highlighting and clinging to the dry patches on my face. I apply my foundations with a sponge, using a fairly basic, hydrating or colour correcting primer. With each foundation I will include a photo of my it when I applied it in the morning, and how it looked at the end of the day (10 hours later). Here is what my skin looks like without any make up on to get a comparison of what the coverage is like.

Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation*

I wear the shade Light Vanilla

Let's start with my latest foundation first. I have only had this one for a few weeks and it is already one of my favourite foundations. I was instantly impressed with the finish and how easily it blended into the skin, the coverage was an added bonus. The coverage is light, but can be built to a medium coverage. However it is still light enough to feel like you aren't wearing any foundation. My skin looks like it is healthy and glowing, which with dry skin can sometimes be hard to get.

As for longevity throughout the day, as you can see in the photo below, it wear's pretty well. Out of all of them I feel like this one lasts the best, and still looks fantastic at the end of the day. There is nothing worse than coming home and thinking 'damn....did I look that bad all day?!' but I don't get that feeling with this foundation at all. It does cling to some of the dry patches on my forehead, and my chin, wearing on some of my spots, and does look a little shinier, but in general it looks pretty good at the end of the day.

Beginning of the day vs. End of the day

Maybelline Dream Cushion Foundation

I wear the shade Natural Ivory

I wasn't going to buy this one, but after hearing some amazing reviews, I had to and boy am I glad I did. It is a light to almost medium coverage that looks so natural. It has a dewey finish and really gives you that 'fresh face' look. I apply this foundation using the sponge, pressing into the cushion a few times before dabbing and spreading onto my skin. I was honestly surprised by how pigmented it was. It's also brilliant because you can chuck it into your hand bag for easy touch ups throughout the day.

This foundation probably faired the worst when it comes to longevity. By the end of the day it was really highlighting my dry patches, looking flaky particularly on my forehead (which you can't really see in the image). It doesn't get the same shiny look at the end of the day as some other foundations, but I do feel that it clings to my skin in some areas. While I love this foundation, I tend to wear it on shorter days, or days when my skin is behaving, mostly because it is lighter and more natural.

Beginning of the day vs. end of the day

Rimmel Wake Me Up Foundation*

I wear the shade Ivory

I did use to love the original formula of this, but I stopped using it because it was just a little too dark for my skin tone. I have to say it's much the same, they don't have a shade that caters well to pale girls like myself, so I have to use some shade adjusters to make it work. Again, another medium coverage foundation that has a nice glowy finish. It blends into the skin well, though it is the thickest of all four of these foundations and takes the most work to blend in, but sits really well on the skin.

It lasts pretty well, though I do have to say I do notice it clinging to my dry skin a little bit over the day as well. It doesn't go super shiny though, which is a bonus as well, the finish stays much the same all day. Much like the Maybelline Dream Cushion, I tend to go for this foundation on days that aren't as long, as it doesn't always wear as well. I think this will be a real winner through summer though!

Beginning of the day vs. end of the day

L'Oreal True Match Foundation

I wear the shade Golden Ivory 1W

I am so glad I followed everyone's advice and picked this foundation up. There are so many shades to choose from, which is brilliant, including warm and cool toned shades. It is the lightest and thinnest foundation of all of these, but blends easily into the skin with an amazing coverage! It can be built from a light coverage to a medium coverage. It probably has one of the best coverage of all of these four. It is glowy, but not oily looking and works amazingly on dry skin.

It lasts really well all day, looking almost as good at the end of the day as it does at the beginning. It does cling a little to my forehead, between my brows, but that is probably the worst of it, it looks great and lasts all day!

    1. It matters to me too. I have tried so many foundations that look fantastic in the morning, but when I come home they look horrendous. I think that is why these four have been real winners for me. They are nothing too special, but their lasting power is so good for their value! So glad you enjoyed the post x

  8. I only really wear BB Cream, and I love the Maybelline one, however for a full coverage foundation you can't really go past Rimmel's Wake Me Up range - I absolutely adore it!

  9. I love the MNY Dream Cushion too Laura, & their Dream Liquid Mousse suits my skin as well although it has no SPF. Also love Australis Stayput! (and it does stay put) as well as Rimmel Lasting Finish & Covergirl Outlast Stay Fabulous. In short there's quite a few drugstore ones that I'm keen on lol ♥ For full cover I go for L'Oreal Infallible Total Cover xxx

  10. Thank you for taking the time to show us all of your before and after pix! It really gives a good view of how the products wear and last. I am actually using 3 of these in rotation at the moment, mostly the Rimmel one. I just purchased the L'Oreal for the first time to try and it arrived in the mail today & I am soooo excited! The only one here I am yet to try is the Maybelline and you have convinced me I need to now, it looks like a lot of fun! :D

    1. I have been loving them all so much! I think how they look in the morning is great, but to me it's all about how they look at the end of the day, so I thought it was super important to keep those in there. I am loving the Maybelline one, it's fantastic!! Light but looks amazing on the skin and the coverage is fantastic!

These all look and sound great but in particular I think I definitely need to give the True Match foundation a go, I've heard so many great things about it and i can't believe how good it looks at the end of the day! Lately my favourite drugstore foundation is the L'Oréal infallible!
