What blogging has really taught me...

8:00 am

Last week, unbeknownst to most of you, The Life of Laura had it's first birthday. That's right! I have now, officially, been blogging for a whole year! I can't believe it. Looking back on those early posts, where I very clearly had no idea what I was doing, to today, where I can at least pretend that I have a tiny bit of an idea of what I am doing, it's been a big journey. It has had it's ups and downs, but I have honestly loved every minute of it and cannot wait to see what the future has to hold for myself and The Life of Laura.

In celebration of TLOL's first birthday, I thought it would be fitting to share what my first year of blogging has taught me - about myself, about beauty and about everything in between. I also thought I'd share some of my favourite photos through the post as well.

1. The Beauty Blogging world is huge. I don't think I ever realised how many THOUSANDS of Beauty Bloggers there are in the world. I don't think I ever realised that blogging was even that big a thing until I started my very own blog. Now I am caught up in the middle of this huge, exciting world, and the lovely people I have met make it all worthwhile. I have made some amazing friends from it all, and I will be eternally grateful for that.

2. Lighting is key. If looking back on my old photos is any indication, lighting is really the most important element to creating gorgeous photos and flat lays. Up until now, I have only used natural light to get photos that I am (mostly) happy with. However, I have just invested in a soft box light to help me when I can't get that perfect lighting.

3. Be kind to everyone you meet. You don't know when you will need a favour, or have to meet them face to face. Just like any scenario, there are people out there who will try to bring you down. If I have learnt anything, it's that you should be kind to all you meet. While the blogging community is massive, people do talk, and if you should need a favour later on down the track, you might regret those nasty comments you once made.

4. Be yourself and be genuine. Don't try to create a platform that isn't you, or doesn't represent what you believe in. People love genuineness, they love getting to know you and seeing who you are through what you create, so let them see that, through what ever way works. As you might have discovered, for me that is often through attempts at humour and light-heartedness. I try not to take things too seriously.

5. There will be stress. While I have loved it, I have 100% stressed over posts, or getting photos, or being extremely unhappy with the photos I have taken. There is a lot of pressure to create something 'perfect' and while we all try to say that perfection doesn't really matter, we will still stress over the little things.

6. But there will also be amazing times. From attending events, getting your first (or basically every single) PR package, to making a new blogging friend that just gets you. Like I said, it has it's ups and downs, but the positive times almost always outweigh the bad.

7. Don't be afraid to reach out for help. While it's terrifying and daunting talk to bloggers with 10,000 followers or more, just know that they were in your place once, and they almost always feel honoured to be asked for help, so ask! Join a Facebook group, send someone a message, but don't be afraid to reach out.

8. Don't worry about the numbers. Yes, I was obsessed with that follower counter and the likes when I first started, but I recently realised that if you are posting quality content, than the numbers don't really matter. Focus on sharing stuff you're passionate about and the rest will come. In the end, whether you have 10k or 1k, it doesn't really matter, it should be about doing what you love, not about the numbers.

9. I love to write. Yes, I thought that school and uni had killed that, but turns out I love to write and I love to share my ideas and to hear what you guys think as well. I have loved discovering that as well.

10. I love to take photographs. Now this one I already knew, but this year has reminded me of it. Getting my new camera and some new lenses has enabled me to start taking the photos I once dreamed of. I have discovered all about flat lays and how to take gorgeous photos, all through my own experimentation.

11. Blogging is an expensive business. If I have learnt anything from my year of blogging (look at me talking like I have all the knowledge in the world about blogging...) it is that it's expensive. If it wasn't for all these damn Beauty Bloggers, I would not have spent as much money on beauty products as I have (oops!)

All in all, I have had a ball this year with my blog and I was so sad at the prospect that I might not have enough time in the future to do as much blogging as I currently am. Thank you too every single one of you for being so supportive of The Life of Laura for the past year, I could not have done it without you guys, and I really do appreciate ever single like, comment or kind word you have all shared with me this year. I cannot wait to see what else 2017 has to offer and to meet more of you beautiful people!!

  1. Yes have a great white looking like is so key hey, it makes such a difference to photos instantly! I need to improve my set up!

Also I love how big the blogging community is and that beauty bloggers and fashion bloggers and lifestyle bloggers all sort of mix together and don't mind crossing paths and all supporting each other - it's an insanely supportive community I think :)

  4. Congrats on making it to 1 year Laura! It's a major achievement, believe me.

I know what you mean about lighting - I try & shoot all of my stuff in natural light, but I've begun thinking about incorporating a light box for days when that's not possible. I've found a tutorial on the web for making my own, so I think I'll have a go at it this weekend. A better camera will have to wait though.

I do like the sense of community that blogging has, but I also know that there's always going to be some bad eggs who'll want to bring others down, mostly out of jealousy & insecurity. Just keep in mind the fact that it says more about them than about you. Haters gonna hate!

I'm looking forward to seeing where your blog will go!

    1. Thank you so much Shell! And thank you for all the support you have given me over the past year as well!

Me too, I have only ever done natural light, which can suck when it is dark or too bright. I am excited to have a light to play around with now as well, so we'll see how that goes!!

There are always some, but they are far outweighed by the loveliest people I have met so far! xx

  7. Congratulations on hitting the big 1 on your blog! You can literally see how far you've grown - and the difference is especially noticeable in the last few months!
I agree with you on all the points you have mentioned on this post - especially being kind to the other bloggers. I've personally experienced a couple of instances where the bad eggs showed their true colours, but overall, the support in the community is great! And hey, if the bad eggs help you be a stronger individual, all the better!
Thank you for all your kind support and words in the last year!

I'm thinking I might need to buy some lighting too. I'm not sure how I will get my photos taken in winter once I'm working full time.
