Tarte || Is it worth the hype?

When I was up in Sydney, about two months ago, I was looking through Sephora and tried out the Tarte Amazonian Clay Foundation and I thought that it actually looked really nice and of course, my make up icon, Zoe Foster-Blake, raves about it, so I thought I'd pick it up. Naturally, Sephora was out of stock in my shade. Thinking I would absolutely love it and as I was yet to try anything Tarte, I decided to pick up a couple of different products to try. There is so much hype around some of these products, so I thought I would add to it and share my thoughts on them!

Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Full Coverage Foundation

I first considered buying this when Zoe Foster Blake started raving about it on her Snapchat. I hate buying foundations online when I don't know my shade, so I kept putting it off. That was until I was in Sydney not too long ago. Anyway, you've heard the rest of the story and now I am the owner of this foundation. For anyone who is also wondering, I wear the shade Ivory.

So this is a full coverage foundation. I find that it is a mousse type texture, quite thick but almost fluffy (this is the first time I've ever described a foundation as fluffy). It blends in really easily to the skin. I bought The Buffer brush to apply the foundation and while it applies the foundation really well, I find that I get a better, more even coverage when I apply this foundation with a sponge, or Beauty Blender. I typically only apply one layer of this foundation, building it up on my chin, or where I have other spots if I need to.

The coverage is amazing. I can see why people love it! A little bit goes a long way, that's for sure! It seems to have more of a matte finish when I first apply it, but I do find that it looks quite luminous by the end of the day. Not oily, but glowy. Initially I didn't love the finish of it, I thought it looked a bit too flat and matte, but it grew on me. My skin looks amazing with on it, and it definitely that lasts all day! I wouldn't wear it every day, especially as I am enjoying more of a natural coverage and finish lately, but it is definitely what I reach for when I am going to a party or an event when I need something that lasts all day, and all looks great in photos (which this also does).

Shape Tape Contour Concealer

Boy has this had some hype around. One Shape Tape is sold every 26 seconds. That is how popular it is at the moment. A thick, creamy concealer that can be used as a concealer or a contour cream. After hearing about the hype and reading numerous reviews, I decided to chuck it my cart seeing as I was doing an order anyway.

I was immediately impressed with the coverage. The coverage and pigmentation is AMAZING. Those pesky spots you want to cover, use some of this and they will be gone! Holly from @brokebypayday also convinced me that it would work for under my eyes! Like Holly, I can never find anything that doesn't crease under my eyes, and I have to say that this definitely does not crease! I am impressed with that!

Do you feel like there's a but coming? That might be because there is...BUT I won't be calling this my holy grail any time soon. You do need to be really careful that you don't use too much. The large doe foot, which is great, does makes it hard in that regards. I find putting a small amount on the back of my hand and then using a sponge to pick up a small amount. I find that if I apply too much, or build it up too much that it cakes rather quickly through the day, and doesn't look great once you get home. As much as I love how well it covers up my spots and how it doesn't sit in the creases of my eyes, I just don't love how it wears on my skin if I accidentally apply a little too much.

So if you're looking for a high coverage concealer, this is definitely fantastic. Just be wary of applying too much, especially on oilier parts of your face!

So there it is, my review on these two Tarte products. Did they live up to my expectations that I had from the hype around them? I definitely like them both, they will never be holy grails (well the foundation might through summer!) but they are fantastic and affordable high end face products.

What you do think about these two products? What are your thoughts?

  2. I've never seen these products before (I've had to withdraw a little from the beauty community--spending ban, haha!), but I've heard people rave a lot about the tarte palette and I'm in love with that so I might have to add these to my wishlist. I'm currently using the stage makeup brand for full coverage (which I can't remember the name of for the life of me, but it was really popular in the beauty comm. a little while ago), but I find it dries my face out SO much SO quickly, so this is definitely something to look into.

    1. Hahaha I understand, I should really do that...I am actually really enjoying the foundation, still not my every day one, but when I want a full coverage, it does a fantastic job!

  3. I love a mousse consistency when it comes to foundation! I used to use one when I was in high-school and felt it gave me the best coverage! And as I said on Instagram, I've heard so many good things about the shape tape! Because it can get a little cakey, I'd probably just use it on my spots since it's such high coverage! Is Ivory their lightest shade in the foundation? I usually go for an 'Ivory' in Maybelline and Rimmel products.

    1. It is a really nice consistency! I am really enjoying it when I want a full coverage. The concealer is really nice, I just find I don't reach for it unless I have something I really need to cover.

There are some lighter shades before Ivory! xx

  4. I'm happy to hear a blunt review about the shape tape at last! My parents are in the US at the moment and I'm hoping they'll pick one up for me to try, so it's good to know that I'll need a light hand. I've tried the foundation before too and I liked it, but not enough to kick one of my other more full coverage options off rotation. Still searching for the HG

    1. You'll have to give it a go!! Yea I do really like the foundation, but then again I don't really have another foundation on the go at the moment haha I just finished my Ellis Faas one, which I LOVE but at $110 a bottle, I just can't justify it... xx

  6. I've only really tried Tarte's blushes - which I really like, but I keep meaning to try more from them! I've been so tempted by Shape Tape, but like you say I'm so hesitant about buying base products online when I don't know my shade! I have heard that if you apply too much it doesn't sit very well which is a bit annoying but in all other regards it sounds awesome! I remember that foundation being quite hyped up a couple of years ago - glad to know it's still a good 'un!

  7. I've wanted to try the Shape Tape for a long time now but I was always afraid it would go cakey too quickly. I'd probably skip out on this. What's your favourite concealer for under the eyes? x

  14. I have wanted to try some products from Tarte for so long but the main thing I've wanted to try was that concealer but everytime I went to order what I thought would be my shade was out of stock! Reading your thoughts on these products really has me on the edge, I'm definitely one to not be light handed when it comes to concealer so I don't know if it will work for me. I'm also terrified of ordering the wrong shades as there is nowhere in the U.K. you can purchase or even swatch Tarte products! Love this post though as always :)

    1. Yea I am the same, so heavy handed with concealer, which I think is why I don't like it so much, I need to train myself to be lighter handed haha That is also a challenge, I took a punt on the concealer, I think it's a tiny bit too light for me, but it works! xxx

  15. Tarte is definitely one of my favourite make-up brands, and it deserves all the hype that it gets! This foundation is also one of my faves, it is a god send for oily skin girls like me. I just love how it looks on my skin as well! I haven't tried the concealer though, but it also sounds amazing! Have you tried the NARS one? If so, how does it compare? The NARS one is my fave at the moment! xx
