Blemish Be Gone: Part 1

I have battled with acnes since my early teenage years. It has been a constant battle that has affected my confidence levels more than it should have. Most of it has been hormonal acne, but they have left scars that I am still trying to get rid of. After trying basically everything on the market, I have finally started to find some products that work, so I decided I would start this new series. I am going to start testing out some new products that are designed to target acne prone skin. I will also being trying some retinol based products, which have also claimed to help with acne. Some things will work, others won't, but I want to share with you, honestly, what acne products on the market are actually worth buying.

For each of these posts, I will have tried the products out for at least one month, usually longer, to get a proper sense about whether they will actually show results or not. Please note that I don't suffer from severe acne, and while these products may help with my acne, they may not work for everyone. I am not an expert in this area, this is just from my personal experience.

So welcome to part 1 of Blemishes Be Gone. Let's just get to it!

Kosmea Certified Organic Rosehip Oil*

I have been using this oil off and on for a few months, but in the last month, after suffering from sensitivity, I decided to make this a permanent part of my skincare routine. Rosehip Oil has made many claims to help with both reducing acne and acne scarring. While I have previously noticed a little change, I never have had a dramatic change from using it. After using this for the past month, I will admit that I have started to notice a change in my skin. My challenge with acne products is that many of them are also targeted at oily skin, and often dry out the skin dramatically. I don't have oily skin, if anything my skin is on the drier side. The benefit of Rosehip Oil, that I have found, is that over time it does help particularly with acne scarring, but also in reducing the size and angriness of pimples, without drying out the skin.

The verdict: Yes, it works. Because it is not a harsh product, it does take longer to start to notice results, but I have found that it definitely has helped my acne reduction, particularly scarring. I really enjoy how it hydrates my skin at the same time. I'd recommend this for if you have a little bit of acne. If you have a worse case, then I would definitely recommend something that is a little bit stronger.

Nip and Fab Glycolic Fix Serum

While the Glycolic Fix serum doesn't make claims against acne, it is designed to help improve the texture of the skin, with a particular emphasis on pore size and wrinkles. Now I don't have issues with either, but I started using this last year and I am already onto my second bottle, which is saying something. This one of the first products I came across that I actually started to notice a change in my skin after using. My skin felt softer and smoother, and I had actually started to notice that my acne scarring and pigmentation had started to clear up. I was amazed! While it says it is an overnight serum, I don't find it to be too strong at all, if anything, it is great for sensitive skin as well.

The verdict: This has become a staple for me. I use it almost every day, sometimes twice a day if I am really struggling to get rid of some pimples. It works wonders for acne scarring, and my skin has really started to look much clearer since I started including this in my routine.

Sunday Riley Martian

Targeted at shine and blemish-prone skin, this transformative cooling gel melts into a water toner as it is massaged into the skin. Formulated with bentonite clay to absorb excess oil and tighten pores; marshmallow and green tea to soothe redness; cucumber and witch hazel extracts to tone and antibacterial manuka, black cumin and magnolia bark extracts to balance the complexion and tackle breakouts. I have tried a few Sunday Riley products throughout the years, I have found them to be a little bit hit and miss. My skin has liked some and not others. I contemplated buying this toner for ages after it came out. Lots of people have raved about it, but I just wasn't sure. It is a pricey toner, so I wanted to know if it worked or not first. Anyway I took the dive and picked it up recently.

The verdict: I am so glad I picked it up. It is amazing. I find it to be really refreshing, and while some hate the scent, I don't mind it - Sunday Riley scents are hit and miss at the best of times. It is quite a thick toner, but it blends into the skin easily. I put some onto a cotton pad and then massage it into my skin. It will leave your skin feeling matte, but not dry. I have noticed a huge change in my skin since I started this. My spots are clearing up much quicker, they are less red and less angry, and are leaving less of a mark when they go. Though it's pricey, I don't think I will ever be able to part with it now.

Indeed Labs Retinol Resurface*

A lot of people have recommended that I try a retinol product to help with my acne and though I have tried a couple, I have never loved any of them. Though I decided I would try another one. This product is designed to help 'resurface' the skin and help with acne, and improving the skins texture.

The verdict: It has definitely helped improved my skin texture. I do hate the pump - there isn't a straw (thing whatever it's called!) that goes all the way to the bottom, so I find that I just unscrew the pump to get any product. Otherwise I love it. This in combination with the Nip and Fab serum has left my skin incredibly soft. This, in combination with all the other products in this post have really helped with clearing up my skin. I would say it works, but I wouldn't use it by itself in the hope of clearing up acne, it works well with other products.

Mario Badescu Drying Lotion

The funny bottle with the liquid that you can't shake. Everyone is raving about drying lotions at the moment and the Mario Badescu is one of the more affordable options for drying lotions. So I thought I'd give it a try.

The verdict: I have tried this on multiple different stages of pimples - before it gets a head, when the head forms, and after. I haven't found it to be very effective at all. I don't think it reduces pimples at all, I haven't noticed any improvement from using this. I apply it to pimples each night before bed and while it does dry out the pimple, I haven't noticed that it helps with my blemishes. It was a miss for me.

So these are the products I have been using recently to help with my acne and I have been amazed with how my skin currently looked. Despite the hormonal breakout I had in the last week, my skin has been looking better than it has in a long time. A combination of each of these has definitely helped with improving my skin. My top tip is to focus the skincare on the area of needs, e.g. the Martian toner on the area where your pimples are worse, rather than wasting it on the parts of your face that don't need it.

Stay tuned for the next instalment of Blemish Be Gone where I feature some more products to see if they really work or not! If you have anything you'd like to hear about, do let me know in the comments xx

  1. I had the same exact thoughts about Mario drying lotion! I tried it so many different ways/times and it didn't do anything besides make a mess in having to get the pink stuff off my skin the next day.

  2. Love this series girl and I can't wait to see the next post!

I've just started using the Mario Badescu drying lotion and actually find it works really well for me! The smell is a bit... yuk, but apart from that - I love it! I don't really suffer with acne, just small spots every now and then, so maybe that's why!

I saw Zoe Sugg raving about the Martian toner so I might have to give it a go! My skins so oily so anything that mattifies is always a winner in my books!

  5. Great recommendations. I found that when I started blogging my skin played up the most from trying so many skincare products. My recommendations is to be consistent with your skincare and not try too many new things at once. Also so disappointed you didn't like Mario's Drying Lotion! I love it! Another product you should try since you love the Nip and Fab Glycolic Fix, is the Alpha H Liquid Gold. It did wonders to my skin xx

  6. I am lucky that I now have really good skin and rarely get breakouts anymore. But I'm still oil-prone. When I had bad acne in my teenage years I used a retinol topical treatment and it helped a lot but you have to be consistent, and persistent haha.

  13. What a great review Laura! I think it will very helpful for everyone who has acne or suffers from even occasional painful blemishes. I tend to suffer from "blind" ones, gosh they hurt so much! I actually ended up going to dermatologist and he prescribed Zineryt. I apply it twice a day on any problematic areas and it does get the job done wonderfully. The only thing - it might lead to dry patches - so just like you I apply Rosehip Oil. It is a great oil indeed!

  18. I struggle with acne too. I have never tried any product of these but i am really curious about the retinol one. it will not clear the skin as you said but retinol is always important in a skincare routine.
