Getting to Know You!

8:00 am

I've never done a Q&A before, but I thought it was about time that I let you guys get to know a little bit more about me! I put a call out on social media and got a whole bunch of questions, and now it's time to answer them! All tied together with some awkward, make up less (and somewhat blurry) photos of me from my holiday earlier this year.

Worst part about being a blogger?

There is not a lot I don't love about being a blogger, but there is one thing. Some bloggers are very competitive, particularly on Instagram. While the vast majority are incredibly supportive, I have come across a couple who just want to bring you down, mostly because they see you as a competitor, someone THEY HAVE TO BEAT! It gets you down and it can, at times, be really hard to ignore.

Best part of being a blogger?

I love pretty much all of it, but in all honesty, my absolute favourite part has been the community I have found myself in, and the people I have met along the way. In real life, I am a quiet, introverted person, who doesn't make friends easily. I have a couple of close friends, but that's it. I feel the complete opposite with the beauty community. I now have so many close friends, that I talk to regularly. I feel so welcomed and supported in this community, it really is amazing.

What are your interests beside beauty?

I have a huge passion for music, it has been a huge passion of mine for a long time, ever since I was 6 (when I first started learning piano). I also love reading, it is what I spend the rest of my money on.

How do you choose what to blog about?

I receive some products which I agree to share a blog post about, so these I tend to slot in where I can. I have some products that I use which I love and just want to share with you. I am also trying to add a weekly post which is not just a review, but is focussed around a topic, or issue. These tend to come to me while I'm trying to sleep (that's where all the good inspiration comes from right?!) and I just build from there. I try not to share 'negative' reviews, but I always try to keep them honest, whether I have been gifted or bought them myself.

What is your Holy Grail product?

Oooh that is a hard one! Skincare wise I'd have to say The Body Shop Camomile Cleansing Butter which is an AMAZING cleanser. Make up would be the NYX BB Cream at the moment.

What is the number one thing on your bucket list?

I really would love to go somewhere in Africa and do a safari, or work at an animal sanctuary, especially one which has elephants. I love elephants and it's something I've always wanted to do!

How long have you been blogging?

Almost a year now! I started back in April 2016, so it's been about 10 months now and I am loving every bit of it!

Do you live by your self or with your partner?

I am currently still living at home with mum and dad, I will be moving in with him at the end of the year. As I'm in my last year of my teaching degree I will have to take lots of time off work, so it's not a practical decision to live out of home yet.

What about your wedding are you most excited about?

Well, aside from the actual wedding and getting married and spending the rest of my life having adventures with the love of my life, I would have to say my dress. Yes, I have already found it (more than a year out...) and it is so beautiful and I cannot wait for everyone to see it, especially Dave!! Also post-wedding: being able to wear his Star Wars pants all the time.

What is the brand you have been most excited to collaborate with?

This is another tricky one, because I have been so excited about every brand I have got to work with so far! I still am like a kid at Christmas when I get collaboration emails. But if I had to choose one I'd probably have to say bhave, which was a brand I eyed off for AGES before getting to work with them.

What are you studying at uni?

Great question! I am studying High School Teaching, specialising in Music and Religious Education. To answer your next question, no I am not religious, it is something I stumbled into and have found fascinating.

If you had all the money in the world, what would you buy first?

Puppies. All the puppies. I would also (wait for the cliché!) probably donate a whole lot of money to charity as well. Or buy a house.

Was blogging initially something you just wanted to do and then grew into something more fulfilling?

It was something I just decided to do one day. I had been reading a few blogs and following a few bloggers on Instagram and just had this desire to do something like that. To have an outlet, and distraction from life that was just mine. It has definitely been something has grown into something so amazing and I am so glad for that day back in 2016 when I decided to start this little blog. When I think about 2018, when I will be (hopefully) working full time as a teacher, I get very anxious about whether I will have time to blog or not. I can't imagine life without it now.

If you had to stick to one brand for the rest of your life, what would it be?

DON'T DO THAT TO ME!!! Make Up would probably by NYX, as I am loving so much by them at the moment. Skincare would probably be Philosophy.

If you never had to work another day in your life how would you choose to spend your days?

I would spend my days either blogging and taking photos, or reading. Probably 100% definitely reading. Though I would love to do some charity work of some sort, I am just not completely sure what or where yet.

What do you think is the biggest struggle of being a blogger?

Constantly having to have new, unique content and beautiful photos. There is so much pressure to have the 'perfect' Instagram and to be always sharing something new and interesting. It is the photos in particular that I struggle with a lot.

Do you have a job and what is it?

I work as a piano and violin teacher, as well as music teacher of different groups (bands, orchestras). It is so much fun and so rewarding.

If you had the choice to live somewhere else, where would it be?

This is a hard one. I know a lot of people hate on Canberra, but I do love it here and honestly couldn't imagine living elsewhere. If I ever do move, I'll probably end up back in Canberra. Though to actually answer the question, probably the UK.

What lighting do you use for your photos?

I don't currently have or use any lights. It is all natural lighting, which means I rely heavily on having a lovely day outside in order to take photos.... I am looking into potentially purchasing a light soon, so if you have any suggestions, let me know!

  3. I enjoyed reading every bit of this. I agree, Instagram can be a tough one. I never, and I mean never, browsed Instagram before I had my blog, which I started a year ago. A couple of months in, I was like I think I need to start an Instagram?? Looking back, the photos were awful. I'm learning though. I hate that some people follow me on Insta only to get me to follow them, and then they unfollow me later! I used to feel like they think I'm worthless, but now I don't care, and I don't follow people who have a huge difference between their number of followers and number of people they follow. Anyway, I enjoy your posts so much and agree that for the extreme most part, this community is so amazing!! Xoxo

  4. I totally agree with your view in the blogging community, I think 99% of the time everyone is so lovely and just wants to chat and support each other and what we do - if anything I think that will always keep me going :)

I can't believe you've only been blogging for 10 months either - feels longer than that. I hear you re: taking photos - it's difficult & I'm still learning too; but as far as I'm concerned, your photos are great!

  18. I find myself struggling with the constant up keeping of taking new pics and finding inspo. Sometimes it is good to take a few days off just re-motivate yourself.

  22. What a delight - loved learning more about you Laura ♥ Love your blog - your articles are always entertaining. I struggled with the photos too in the early days, but now I love that side of things more than anything else. Lighting is ESSENTIAL for you to have fun with pics, props help a lot too - I don't have anything fancy, just two floor lamps with the brightest globes I can find, and two very powerful LED desk lamps with twisty necks so I can swivel them around. I reckon I only spent $120 all up xxx
