Conscious and Concentrated

The title got you intrigued huh? Well today I'm going to be talking about Ethique's Conscious and Concentrated Beauty Bars. That's right folks, beauty products that come in the form of bars! Ethique, a New Zealand company, was founded by Brianne, a Bio-Chemist and Formulator Extraordinaire, who discovered a way to create solid shampoos. She didn't stop there and went on to create more than 30 beauty bars, from shampoo to skincare. Funding has allowed Ethique to move into its own manufacturing facility with a customised lab where Brianne continues to formulate cutting-edge products that marry science with nature.  All Ethique products use ethically sourced, naturally-derived and sustainable ingredients.

Shampoos/Conditioners

Solid shampoo and conditioners are really interesting and something I never even thought to try. The instructions for both essentially say 'Wet the bar and your hair. Swipe the bar several times down your hair from root to tip. Put the bar down and lather shampoo into hair- it will foam!' It does take a while to get used to using the bar, but I was surprised by how easy it was to foam the bars. You can either rub the bar through your hair, or in between your hands, either way gets a good foam. I also have to say that they will last FOREVER. I've used them multiple times and they still look brand new.

St Clements - Shampoo for Oily Hair

St Clements is designed for all those people who struggle with oily hair (aka me). There are no harsh 'stripping' surfactants (foaming agents) which just create more oil, nor is there any silicone. Instead, they just use natural ingredients including Rosemary, Juniper, Lime, Lemon and Orange Extract. These ingredients are all designed to clean and freshen the scalp. It also claims that you won't need conditioner either.

I have to say, I was impressed, typically shampoo for oily hair, doesn't help my oily hair, but this did give me an extra day in between washes - which is hugely helpful! I found the scent really refreshing and light, and the bar foams really easily.

Heali Kiwi - Shampoo for Dandruff or Scalp Problems (Sample)

Specifically for those who suffer from scalp problems, this bar is chock full of Kiwifruit Oil, Coconut Oil, Neem Oil, Oats, Calendula and Manuka Oil. So essentially, if you have a dry scalp or dandruff, than this is perfect for you. I have been suffering from a little bit of dandruff lately and while this shampoo made my hair soft and clean, I haven't yet noticed a huge difference in my dry scalp. It does make my hair feel silky soft though!

Wonderbar - Conditioner For Normal to Oily Hair

A solid conditioner bar that doubles as a shaving bar and an in-shower moisturiser for those with sensitive skin. With Coconut Oil, Cocoa Butter and Vanilla it is hydrating and smells amazing. Out of the three, this was my favourite hair product. It was the one that really left my hair feeling silky soft. While it didn't 'foam' up, it very easily melted into my hair. Also it smells amazing! Added bonus, it is a heat protectant that lasts all the way until your next wash. It is also a great multi tasking product, and I have to say I love to use it for shaving now as well.

Face

Ethique also has a number of bars for the face as well, from cleansers to moisturisers, as well as some serums.

In Your Face Cleansing Bar

Designed around how your skin looks and feels after swimming in the sea, this cleanser is based most importantly on it's salt content. IYF is made with Coconut oil, Mandarin & Sweet orange essential oils, Cocoa butter, fresh raspberries and lots of sea salt. It is also meant to be great for those with bacne and other skin issues.

Out of all the bars I tried, I have to say this was my least favourite. I found it to be just a little too solid for my liking, and hard to use as a cleanser. I prefer a creamy cleanser that I can massage easily into the skin, where as this was just a little too hard for that and it was hard to get it to foam.

Saving Face Serum

Saving Face is pure luxury; made with Cupuacu, Shea & Illipe butters and Rosehip & Pomegranate oils. Why these ingredients? Because they have high concentrations of antioxidants, phytosterols, polyphenols and fatty acids to promote firm, hydrated skin.

There is a reason I saved this one for last. It is my absolute favourite product that I have used from the Ethique range. I was immediately so impressed by how hydrated and soft my skin felt after using this. It can either be used as a serum, under moisturiser, or as a moisturiser itself. It is hydrating enough that it can be a moisturiser. I find it works best to rub the bar between my hands for a couple of seconds and then massage my hands onto my face. The heat from your hands will soften the bar enough to get some product on your hands. If you have dry or sensitive skin, this is a life saver. It has helped with my odd dry patches, and irritations, and is seriously just incredibly hydrating. The box comes with three bars, which all last quite a while - just be careful not to leave them in the heat for too long!

All in all, I have been pleasantly surprised by how well these bars work, especially the serum. I think they are so good for travelling, especially the shampoo and conditioner, particularly because they are so compact, and you can't end up with leakage, like a bottle can. I need to invest in some of their in-shower containers, to store and carry my bars. But I love how natural they are, and how well they work. I will definitely be investing in more of the serum when I run out!

  3. I like the idea of a bar serum, very cool. I've tried the lush shampoo bars and while they are fantastic, they didn't seem to clean my scalp as I have really thick hair. But I love the idea of them.

  7. I'm obsessed with solid shampoo bars! My hair is super long and thick and I find that a little goes a long way with bars as opposed to bottles of product that disappear before my eyes in a matter of washes. Love this post!
