In-Flight Essentials

The worst thing about flights is how awful your skin can look and feel when you arrive at your destination. With my long-haul flight coming up, I decided it was important to plan how I would look after my skin this time around. After much research (talking to my beauty friends!) and experimentation I've finally decided on the products that I will take with me on the plane to keep my face feeling fresh all the way there!

If I learnt anything from my last long-haul flight, there are two important things you need to try to get while on the plane. Hydration and sleep. Hydration will keep your skin and body feeling refreshed and make it easier to recover once you land. It also helps to keep any germs that are floating around in the air at bay as well. Sleep is always important. It is so challenging on long-haul flights (for me anyway), but getting a little bit of shut eye can help you to feel far more refreshed and ready for adventure at your destination. How do we achieve both of those? I have a few tips to help with both hydration and sleep:

Hydration

Hydration is the easy one to manage on the flight. My top tips?

  1. Drink up! Keep your fluids up, take all the water that the flight assistants offer you and then as for me. I know it is tempting to drink all the other free drinks they have to offer, but keep your water levels up is the most important of all the drinks to be intaking on the flight. Your body needs water to feel alive, so quench it's thirst!
  2. Face wipes: these help to cleanse your skin and get any dirt, grime or sweat off your face. Try not to wear make up on your long-flight and if you do, remove it when you get on the plane and then reapply later if you need to.
  3. Facial Moisturiser: take a good one with you on the flight. My weapon of choice? The Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief, it is lightweight and soaks in quickly, so you will feel hydrated without feeling weighed down by moisturiser.
  4. A face mist can also help with hydration, spritzing it throughout your flight for little extra hydration. My favourites: The Body Shop Vitamin E Facial Mist or Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Rose Water.
  5. An overnight mask is also a great way for hydration. Pop it on as they turn the lights down and let it soak in, you can then cleanse it off with your facial wipes towards the end of your trip. The Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Face Mask is my favourite, plus they come in a small travel size. I have put the last little bit into a small jar instead though.
  6. Remember you can only take liquids less than 100ml, so buying some travel jars, like these Manicare ones will enable you to take everything you need without going over the limit! The Manicare ones are great as the jars come with a little spatula to help your get the products out too.
  7. Lip balm and hand cream are also great for your hands. You can also take a small body lotion for your legs as well. I am taking my Frank Body Lip Balm and Skin Fix Hand Repair Cream. This Works also have an In Transit Body Lotion to keep your skin hydrated.
  8. Taking a nasal spray to spray into your nose every few hours will also help to keep your nose hydrated. Sounds weird I know, but if you can keep your sinuses hydrated you are less likely to end up getting sick. Fess have a Frequent Flyer nasal spray which is designed for flying.
  9. Cleaning your teeth on the flight will also help you feel much more refreshed as you land as well. Nothing worse than fuzzy teeth.

Sleep

Now comes the challenge - sleep. I can sleep anywhere and everywhere, yet put me on a long-haul flight and I will be awake every minute of that flight. Anyone else the same? I've decided to plan ahead this time. My plan?

  1. Try not to watch all the in flight movies and TV shows if you want to sleep, they will keep you awake all flight if you let them.
  2. Use a fragrance/scent to help relax your scents. I am taking my This Works Sleep Plus Pillow Spray. It is super relaxing and though it doesn't put me to sleep, but helps to relax the senses.
  3. Use an eye mask. I have a cute silk eye mask which I received in a Mecca gift set over Christmas. Let's hope this helps me get some shut eye!
  4. If all else fails, sleeping pills? (I do not endorse this in anyway, but if anyone has some suggestions for me, I'll take them...)

This is just my short list of in-flight essentials to help me feel refreshed. Do you have any top tips for flyers? I'd love to hear your suggestions ahead of my long flight, I'm dreading it a little, just looking forward to the other side! xx

  1. As a regular traveller I agree with all of these flight tips. A hard working lip balm, face mist and hydrating face lotion are my main in-flight beauty essentials ♡

  2. ahhh. I dread long flights. I can't sleep at all while everyone else around me is snoring away. a good neck pillow is imperative if you want to sleep, for me if I drift off, my neck falls to one side and wakes me.. lol. I'm just not a good sleeper. But since you are the neck pillow should help heaps!

    1. I'm hopeless at sleeping on long flights! I can sleep anywhere, but if I'm on a plane for 10+ hours somehow my body just goes 'NO!!!!!" >< We'll see how we go this time! I'll have to steal mums neck pillow! xx

  3. I've never heard of taking nasal spray! I'll have to try. I'm big on lip balm and I know that I should drink more water but part of me wants to limit them awkward trips to the airplane toilet.

    1. I didn't either until I went away last year and saw my doctor just before, she told us to use a nasal spray every 2-3 hours while on the plane, I don't know if it works, but if it helps I'm all for it haha

I know what you mean about the awkward trips! Especially if you're in the middle....

  4. I agree with all of these, it always makes me laugh when people are on a long flight with full glam makeup... face wipes are so refreshing and a full face of makeup just isn't. And hydration!! I drank so much water on my last flight, but because I have a little one, I always try to get a first aisle seat so he has room to play on the floor and then I'm close to the bathroom ;) Jackie (Lipstick, Lattes & Louboutins)

    1. I agree! I could't do it! I sometimes where a bit of concealer on the plane if I have a few big spots, but as soon as I'm on off comes the make up! I sometimes cover up before I get off too, but otherwise it's all bare skin!

  5. Great post! As a frequent flyer I love hearing new recommendations for keeping your skin hydrated during those long haul flights! I also find it hard to catch z's while up in the air but I find that putting on some headphones and turning on some chill out tunes helps me relax, zone out and get a little sleep before I arrive :) x

  6. Excellent suggestions Laura, and your cute little pack of skincare is impressive for both it's tiny size, and the effective goodies it contains. Well done! I haven't flown anywhere for years so I don't have any other suggestions to add, besides you've covered everything ♥

  9. I reckon you've covered everything Laura! I've got a couple of long-haul flights coming up for my own trip (1 of them overnight, thankfully in premium economy so maaaaybe I'll be a bit more comfy) & I'm not looking forward to my face turning tomato red whilst onboard, but I always do my best to keep my skin well hydrated. I know what it's like to run out of lip balm whilst flying long-haul & I never EVER want that to happen again! I keep thinking I need to get a good neck pillow, but I find them & eye masks uncomfortable for some reason.

  10. Yes, some great tips! I always want to drink all the free water but at the same time I want to avoid having to go to the tiny toilet, so I'm like, maybe I just won't drink much! I get claustrophobic in those tiny toilets!
